It really is that way and it's sad.
...mostly for less-known editors. I realize there are probably TONS of gems out tehre that don't get a second look while we (myself included) shower the attention to those who are known to do good work...even if it's not that as good as what well...gave us those huge expectations.
To be honest (and yeah I guess I'm a dick), I've seen plenty of videos by 'well-known' editors that I found quite boring or average and yet people loved them. I imagine the same could be said of some of my work and well...that's normal.
Different strokes for different folks...although they forgot to add that some folks have an inherent advantage I guess.

I do want to have some kind of image for my vids, but it´s a curse somehow. Do you remeber when JCD brought out his Haruhi vid? There were often the annoying comments: "This isn´t JCD! There is no eurobeat in it."
Image doesn´t mean to put yourself in one box.
It´s about how to present yourself. If you come up with a bullshit announcement wallpaper I assume that you might have a bad taste of just don´t pay much attention on effort.
To GQ´s vid: I know the original vid and somehow I think his parody is some kind of weak. It´s just not a good parody. *shrugs*

Or Copy Cat! *sigh* I was one of a few people who gave his first videos a chance and I don´t regret it ^^
Uhm... yeah but I hardly give new names a chance. Due to the fact that my time is limited and I´m just nitpicky. It would be just annoying ^^

I remeber about how I didn´t got attention with my first 3 video announcements here. It´s not that they´re that cool or awesome, but somehow nice. However it really discouraged me often...mostly for less-known editors. Sadly, there isn't a video named "Bite Me, Wolf Boy". Oh, god I hoped there was!DriftRoot wrote:It's a decent theory, but good packaging goes all the way back to selecting a good AMV title. Label a video "KougaxInuyasha Tribute" and not many people are going to bother to even CLICK on your AMV and see what it's all about. Name that same AMV "Bite Me, Wolf Boy" and you're going to get a better response right out of the gate.
I'm also surprised that people don't make full use of the "Comments" section of the Video Information. I can't begin to count how many AMVs have something like, "Hope you like it its one of my more recent ones please send opinions" and doesn't mention anything about the actual video, why I should download and watch it, or what was the motivation for making it. An established, veteran editor can probably do the same thing and get many people to watch their AMV, but the average "nobody" editor should use whatever tools are available to advertise their videos. It doesn't have to be a 1000 word essay, but 50 to 100 words can easily let me know why I should load your video into Media Player Classic.
Presentation goes quite a ways in getting positive feedback and scores. Having good, consistent video quality and solid editing puts popular editors ahead of many of the lesser-known editors. Consistent output also helps by keeping you in the mind of the viewers. I haven't released a video in a long time and I think I've dropped off the radar of many people that aren't forum regulars. Of course, I've stopped advertising my videos in my signature, which honestly helped a lot in getting people to at least take a look at them. I haven't had a QC in over a year.
Word of mouth goes quite a ways. I'm not sure about having your video featured in #amv-review, but it can get you some exposure if you are looking for it. I probably would have never watched this video if JaddziaDax hadn't mentioned it. Plus, the editor's comments about the video got me more interested. Admittedly, this video has quite a few flaws and has scores that reflect that.
But Star Averages can't tell the whole tale, and are at best a reflection of the relative quality of the video. Opinions are a more accurate way to rate a video since you can critique each aspect of the AMV from concept to video quality. Star Averages have a limited scoring range (1-5), where opinion scores can range from 1-10. Opinions also mean more because generally, videos with high scoring opinions mean that people went a bit out of their way to rate the video. Conversely, if the video has many opinions and low scores, there are some serious things wrong. Stars are compulsory and I'm sure quite a few people leave 3 star scores to clear out their download queue, especially if they don't remember much about the video to give it a more accurate score (3 stars being average and the recommended score to give out for videos with playback problems according to the FAQ).

I will say this about star scores: there are few things that will make me more annoyed than watching an AMV with a relatively high (let's say at least 3.8) star score that completely lets me down. I've found out the hard way that it's wise to consider who's watching a given video when evaluating what it's star score really means. This is why I love stumbling across really good, relatively lesser-known videos because it's great to watch an AMV and NOT be let down.Willen wrote: But Star Averages can't tell the whole tale, and are at best a reflection of the relative quality of the video. As far as ops, I think they also suffer from creator stigma. Some people hand out 9s and 10s left and right because the editor in question has a certain reputation (note I did not say good rep). They assume, I guess, that anything and everything that editor makes is awesome in no small part because of who made it. While I personally might have higher expectations of certain editors, when it comes time to op their videos I try very hard not to rate on a curve. I try to evaluate JUST the AMV, not the editor. There are other places to weigh in about how good an AMV is relative to the others someone has produced.
This is one reason why I see little conflict between stating that someone's made a good AMV and then giving it an average op rating (or vice versa). For starters, "good AMV" is an extremely broad term. You can make a video that is really good at capturing the essence of a song, but still has technical problems, for instance. When it comes time to op, I'm not going to overlook the tech flaws just because I thought it was a great interpretation of the song. Works the other way, too - I can give an AMV a pretty high op rating based on its technical merits (which is what the op system focuses on), but not find it a particularly enjoyable and/or memorable video. There are a lot of pieces that all have to fall into place to create a truly great AMV, which is one reason they're so awesome: it's not easy to get all those pieces in place and a lot of factors have to be just right for it to happen.

Ops range from 6-10 95+% of the time and are optional feedback, so it's not much better.Willen wrote:But Star Averages can't tell the whole tale, and are at best a reflection of the relative quality of the video.
