That and maybe in a more constructive and diplomatic way. For instance, well written movie reviews are civil about it and point out strengths and weaknesses without the need to resort to "it totally sucked or only bunch of idiots watch it, etc, etc)...
We aren't paid for reviewing this anymore than you were paid for making it. So it's no surprise our review has the same relationship to a paid newspaper review that the AMV has to videos that are turned in to paying clients.
As far as the rest, I'm not really seeing a problem with people saying in public the same thing they'd say in private. Would you really rather we say it was great when we think you might hear about the comments then whisper behind your back about problems we saw with it? Doesn't the org have enough of that already in the announcement forum?
I would also hate to resort to a moderated debate just so people are forced to behave.
Actually it is moderated. There are five mods for the channel. Although the only time I would have ever used my mod powers was a couple weeks ago when things crossed from crudely stated opinions to personal attacks but I wasn't there at the time so whatever. The review is also moderated in that the logs do get edited usually. As should be obvious from the snip before GQ entered and made on-topic comments, I did edit out the conversation before & after the review that was irrelevant to the video. But what driftroot said was related to the video so it stayed in. Personally I thought it was rather tongue in check and it didn't even occur to me that she'd say something like that seriously. Still doesn't actually. So yeah, it's moderated. If someone had said that you are a cocksucking son of a bitch they'd be booted and it would get taken out of the log. But comments on the video or generalized comments about it's intended audience instead of specific people, I think that's fair game.
For the various comments by people about flaming and the like, I'll point out that most people who participated did mention parts of the video they liked. Star Trekin, the dancing transformers, and the hello fairy thing were mentioned as good things about the video. There was some positive comments on the tech side of things as well even though review intentionally doesn't emphasize the tech side of things. So it wasn't all negative although the negative was rather crudely phrased and easy to jump on if you're inclined to do so. So if someone hadn't read anything but a bad comment in a really long time I gotta wonder if they actually read the log or just felt like joining in to bitch. There's a clear difference between outright flaming and -review. Do I need to post examples of what flaming is?
As a total side note, am I the only one that noticed this type of backlash only pops up when review looks at stuff given an almost cult like status? No one cares what is said about random nobodies but say anything except high praise for Spoil or Songbird or Vlad...
Maybe review should do an Ileia vid next week just to get the cult followers really wound up.
