Site FAQ: Questions

Post by Savia » Wed Apr 23, 2008 10:58 pm

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/help/

As I'm sure at least some of you are aware, the above link is the current .Org Site FAQ. It isn't in the most obvious of places, it's quite limited, and it is certainly out of date. I wrote that version and the Powers That Be have decided it's time for a new one :)

This is where you come in! The first and foremost thing I need in order to write a good and helpful FAQ is a list of questions that need to be answered, and potential answers, too. The best way of getting that list is for everyone to brainstorm right here.

First though, a FAFAQQ (Frequently Asked FAQ Questions) list:
  • Read the current FAQ first; it's the basis of what we're trying to achieve here

Questions should be short and to the point- no one likes to have to read miles of text

Question should be relevant to the site and easy to understand

Questions should have a good answer- nothing too vague, unhelpful or subjective. If you know the answer, post it. If you don't, just post the question

Low tech- There are many, many more users who are non-creators than creators and this is not the place for technical answers

If you can answer a question by linking to a site area, other site information, or post, then that's all that needs to be done. No need to retread ground.
"A creator needs only one enthusiast to justify him." - Man Ray
"Restrictions breed creativity." - Mark Rosewater

A Freudian slip is where you say one thing, but mean your mother.

Question: Why can't I type boochsack in the forums? OMG it did it again? Why?!

I think in general some UToob items would be good, such as:

Question:
Can I share AMVs I find here on UToob?/How do I share AMVs I like on UToob?/Will I get in trouble if I...
Answer: Please don’t unless you get permission from the creator(s)/You shouldn’t unless you get permission from the creator(s)/Maybe, but it's much more likely you will become butt of nasty comments about UToobers swiping other people’s work.

Question: Can I upload a UToob video to the ORG?
Answer: Lots of issues here, I’m sure the powers that be would be better than I at rounding up appropriate remarks. Some kind of warning that low-quality AMVs will not get a warm reception would probably a good idea to include.

Question: How can I view videos without downloading them, like on UToob?
Answer: You can’t. (blah blah blah)

Question: How do I link to my UToob video?
Answer: First, upload the video here, then worry about placing links to it wherever you want. (This of course doesn’t mention that certain songs/subject matter cannot be uploaded to the ORG, but hopefully anyone who runs into that issue will take a look around and be able to figure out why).

Question: Why can’t a find X AMV on UToob?
Answer: Because a-m-v.org is not UToob and many AMV creators do not feature their work on any site other than this one.

And the list goes on... These are just suggestions, of course...but at least if these were posted somewhere official, when some UToober makes a fuss we can just point them towards the FAQ.

Yeah, actually I should have said this earlier, but I remember (waaaayyy back) finding the FAQ extremely confusing...there are a lot of basic questions which don't even show up there, which you have to go somewhere else to find the answers to, but you'd have no idea where to look/how to ask unless you know this entire site pretty well. Breaking all the FAQs down into specific areas would be very, very helpful and would make it a lot easier to identify what areas might be missing or might need fleshing out.

Pssh, faq? Who reads those? Unless you're stuck in a game or something...

First time login page should read "Lurk Moar." and link to the forums.

I think this is the age old problem, the people who would benefit the most from reading a faq aren't going to read them by nature.

On the other hand, if you were to go about a much needed revision, a "why can't I... utube... " section would be helpful for those in dire need. I nominate Driftroot.

What if someone doesn't want to use the forum? There are people who just wanna download videos, y'know.
