I don't think story is essential to character tributes... but depending on the song it can help...

Depending how you are going with it, a story can be important for a character tribute but its not always needed.
For example when I did a tribute to my favorite character from Otogi Juushi Akazukin, no story was needed
Its not like he was alive long enough for one anyway..

I think it many ways it depends on the anime and character that is being used.

When a show has a character's personality and how it's feelings come through because of the event that is happening around his or her then it's very important to try to tell the story in the amv.

For example in an anime when a character is very depressed because his best friend died and the majority of the anime shows him moping and crying then when making a tribute amv of him you should put the story in about his best friend dying.

Without any indication of why he's so sad the amv will most likely fail to touch the audience.

There are also many shows out there where the characters are the way they are because that's how they were designed to be. These character's tribute amvs do not need a story.

Now this is not the best example since this character below does have a story BUT it does a great entertain the audience without giving a background of the character.

I don´t really think that this question is necessary itself. It´s like limitating yourself. Honesty: In wich percentage of character profiles do you see a complete story of events that retell a charackter? Like the typical way of life from Vegeta in DBZ.

It doesn´t really matter and it´s really not necessary. With randomn scenes with mimik, small reactions and feelings you often get the same ressult in a much easier way. I don´t think that there are too many popular editing animes that offer enough stuff to show complete small stories for character profile amvs.

In my opinion the song with the lyrics and feelings can already characterize a figur enough.

A tribute can simply be just showing key scenes of a character without having an actual story.
