The underlying story here also can be that a lot of people have preconceived notions about what kind of AMV you can make to a certain song or series. If you do something that does not conform to those notions and it makes them mad, then they believe the song x anime pairing was a failure.
It's still shifting blame from what the viewer sees as a failure on the editor's part (justly or unjustly, it doesn't matter, they're still deflecting) to the music and anime. It's not really a valid complaint, just something that people have become accustomed to saying so they can be critical without feeling like they're criticizing the editor.

I kinda do what LivingFlame said.

The pairing becomes much easier if you have a predetermined list of stuff to choose from.

This doesn't just apply to the specific songs and what animes you have; but within them. For instance, I may have chosen to use one particular anime, but the more scenes I sift through, and the more I organize the footage, the easier it becomes to pair the footage to the song; Or if you are doing a Various amv, "clip-stocking" is going to make it much easier to connect with a song, since you'll have much more material to work with.

I`m one of those who say not all songs has an anime, but there are those who forces a song on an anime thru special fx &/or careful editing. That`s not a bad thing, depending on the outcome.

Angry song, angry video.

Happy song angry video, wtf?!!

Convoluted lyrics, random video moods, were you on drugs then?

Popular tune, crummy video content, bad syncing could you try a little harder please?

Typical tune, popular video sequences, a nauseating barrage of special effects, pat on the head, yes dear you are so clever, now run along and play.

I have a simple rule for matching audio to video. If the idea makes me giggle, it's worth pursuing.

I was just going by my own experience - every time someone's opined that my song x anime pairing was poor, they're very clear that they think I'm to blame and I need serious counseling. Heh, what can I say - I seem to pick AMVs/anime/songs that make people go  :? or :o :) but not really ...wait, there's no emoticon for that. I'll just use  then.

I can understand how a lot of people would take the easy way out and just say "oh, bad song x anime choice," but to me that speaks more to laziness than an attempt to shift blame or be faux critical. If you don't know what to say or can't be bothered to give what you DO say careful consideration, then don't say anything.

I think anything can fit if you make it fit. The concept is what really matters. I have seen a russian rap song with Lucky Star and couldn't believe how that could have worked out before I downloaded it, but after I have seen it, I was like "wow that was awesome". So I believe any music can fit to any anime. If you want to do something weird then it gets more attention anyway x)
