Pairing anime and song
I've was thinking about all the comments that I and others make on videos and most of you will have seen "the anime and song fit well together" or "the anime & song really dont work together"
Now for me editing aside it's instinctual i hear a song and my mind conjures images that animeXsong choice work 60% of the time, often i just pull the song into premiere and plonk a few random scenes on the timeline and watch it play through and that tells me for certain whether they fit.
It's kinda like cooking and knowing that you dont put strawberry jam in a spinach and cheese quiche, more instinctual than a thoguht process.
Then there are some really weird combinations that seem to work Princess TuTu X Planet Hell. I would never have thought of those 2 together but it works really well.
I suppose I'm interested in how others decide on thier audio X video combination.
or seeking confirmation that I'm not the only weird one :p

I realize I haven't actually made an AMV yet, but I do have several ideas floating around in my head (and in a notepad document for safe keeping
), one of which I plan on starting as soon as the source gets to me in the mail, lol. In all cases, it pretty much works like this:
I'll be listening to a song, not having any intention to ever make an AMV out of it, and then out of nowhere scenes from some random anime start bouncing around inside my head with the music. I'll listen to it a few more times and think about it a bit more critically, and if I think it's a good fit, it goes down in a notepad document for future reference.
Yep. That's it. Simplistic, no?

I'd say deciding factors for me when I look at whether an Anime and song mesh are Lyrics and Mood. If there are no lyrics, mood takes precedence. However it can be a little annoying to watch a video wherein the lyrics have diddle to do with the scenes being used, or the Anime in general. Unless, of course, it is a comedy/parody video.

When people are saying that "a series and a song don't fit", what they're really saying is "your concept either sucked or was executed poorly" but by saying it's the song and anime, not your concept, they're deflecting blame from you onto the sources you used so they don't seem so direct and in-your-face about the whole thing.

While true, the proposed question is still relevant as, by this logic, asking "how others decide on their audio X video combination," is the same as asking how others come up with their concept.BasharOfTheAges wrote:When people are saying that "a series and a song don't fit", what they're really saying is "your concept either sucked or was executed poorly" but by saying it's the song and anime, not your concept, they're deflecting blame from you onto the sources you used so they don't seem so direct and in-your-face about the whole thing.
Regardless of how it's stated, the intention of the statement remains the same.

I think recently I would now judge how good a pairing was based on two things. Firstly I would be mindful of how the song made me feel and whether it was a similar reaction I got watching the anime itself. Secondly I would try to follow the lyrics of the song to listen for a possible connection to the themes found in the anime, not just a straight out explicit connection. Although sometimes I think there are occasions when music and anime can just click, leaving you to perhaps post-rationalise the pairing as you edit.

As has already been said, I think the music can be broken down into two things, lyrical sync and mood. (no duh
) If the songs about two friends betreying each other\how depressing the world is, it's probably not going work with lucky star, however, if the mood is a fast paced major with big solo guitar\drum riffs (see hell song) then it won't work for a drama\sentamintal amv either, If the two are conflicting (try..."get ready to die") the mood usually takes presidence. If both click and there's good editing, then there you go.

hmm I'd like to think that is not always the case (granted it is much of the time) but there are occasions where 2 different amvs have been made to the same song using different anime and I've found 1 just fits so much better than the other regardless of whether the editing was better/worse with one or the other video. So not so much a concept X story thing. x_XBasharOfTheAges wrote:When people are saying that "a series and a song don't fit", what they're really saying is "your concept either sucked or was executed poorly" but by saying it's the song and anime, not your concept, they're deflecting blame from you onto the sources you used so they don't seem so direct and in-your-face about the whole thing.
