neither, it would probably make the video just suck in general.

the thing is the Explosion is the only thing that causes my reactions, and not the video... but the video causes the explosion therefore the video sucks, cause exploding my computer sucks.

But I think it would help to tell us a little more about your essay. In most essays, it is frowned upon to give excessive background information beyond a short summary. So I think spending a sentence on each major genre (or something along those lines) is just going to prove to be a waste of energy, especially if your descriptions end up being similar to common feature film genres (e.g. action AMV have lots of fast cutting...)

If you're looking at genres unique to AMVs, like an AMV Hell genre, then describing it might be worthwhile to your essay.
Me and Mihai are writing an essay for school and the reason we chose AMV's was because we wanted to do something we're both interested in.
We go to Music and Production and one of the criterias for the essay is that it is about music of some sort and since we're both into anime and manga we thought about this.
A friend of ours had a lecture about AMV's so we have used a lot of his information that he has gathered here at the org and the internet. And what we want to know about AMV's is pretty much everything. How do you do an AMV, are there rules, is there any history about AMV's, genres etc .etc.
We thought it would be a good idea to start discussions about these things so we can get information and opinions about AMV's for the essay since it is so hard to find information about this on the net.
We would really appreciate your help so we can do a great job with this :)

First off, it's a hobby. It doesn't have a governing body that makes mandates from up on high. Secondly, it's an artistic hobby (not making a mandate that AMVs are art, but that "art-people" seem to think it is and i'm pretty sure that's the only criteria that matters fro where i'm going with this). If you combine these two things and expect to get definitive answers that are anything but opinion you're fooling yourself.

Your questions are posed as if there were answers that we could give that would be more valid than the information that is readily available all over the site... That's really not the case.

I say you write your eassy about what is music

I cranked out a 3-6 page essay on that a few years ago, it's an awesome topic, and the conclusion is

"it is music, it is subjective(godix will hate me), everything and nothing is music"

so you get to write about nothing for a few thousand words and isn't that what college is all about?

P.S. for reference I would like to refer you to

or

and especially

"Stop fetishizing the inherent and delinated meanings of music."

hope this helps.

Sorry for the Double post but I should have wrote "My conclusion is" not THE conclusion ... i don't want to claim to have definitive answers.

Action video - Fight scenes cut quickly.

Romance video - Focuses on faces a lot, and the more closely the two are together, the more they are in love.

Drama video - The inverse of the above. Focuses on faces a lot, but keeps them farther apart.

Comedy video - A lip-synched character. Sometimes more than one.

Dance video - Uses transformation scenes coupled with Haruhi concert scenes and/or the Lucky Star opening sequence.

Horror video - Uses a vampire anime.

Fun video - Not a stand-alone category, must be used in conjunction with comedy or dance.

Sentimental video - Not a stand-alone category, must be used in conjunction with drama or romance.

Character profile video - Selected alongside any genre

Parody video - Cannot actually parody something. Only used in conjunction with comedy.

Trailer video - Use of Advent Children with any movie trailer audio.

Other video - Created by Fall_Child42, trythil or Otohiko.

What I meant was to explain what we're doing and ask for help since we can't find " the valid information that is available all over the site". We're totally lost in this forum and are having a hard time finding anything that might answer our questions and thoughts.
We are also well aware of the fact that there probably aren't any exact answers to our questions but it doesn't mean that it'll be useless to our essay since we are investigating and the essay will be the result of this investigation.

I'm not saying there is a correct place to find it. The only things you could even loosely construe as fact have been presented in this thread already; but it's all opinion anyways. You can drill it down to sub-sub-sub (ad infinitum) genres and have your entire essay be 50 pages of pure list, or you could make shit up and be just as correct as anyone else here.

As for sources for citation purposes or whatnot - Just because you have sources doesn't mean they're reliable ones. Random people on an internet forum also do not constitute reliable sources. So, we can't point you to some central location you can cite as a source, and we (in this thread right here) really aren't reliables sources... did I miss anything? What, again, do you hope to get out of all of this? Does this essay of yours not need to have any credibility behind it? Just the appearance of credibility?

I totally agree with you, you aren't reliable sources. For all we know everything we have learned this far might be bullshit.
What we want to get out of this is answers to our questions even if the answer is "there is no definite answer to this question, noone really knows" it is still an answer. We'll have to write that and simply discuss it in the essay.
