I had no idea. Maybe it's because I read Hikaru no go years before I read Death Note so I didn't connect the two.

Ah... I started with Death Note so I was able to make the connection and both manga says "Art by: Takeshi Obata" on the cover.

According to the manga though, there's not such thing as Heaven or Hell. Ryuk states (just before Light dies) that Death is equal and all humans end up in Nothingness.

WTF??? SO thats why the souls didnt go to heaven or hell. I wonder what the end of the anime would have been if ryuk would have told the humans that there was no afterlife? Or is there just a place called nowhere and all humans end up there and are recycled back after a while?
