Videos and rating
Hello to all. I am currently conducting a final project about this website and the videos its users download. I am trying to find out whether or not it would be beneficial for the site to change its downloading strategy in order to make the comment and rating system more efficient. The main question that needs to be answered is would the site become more efficient switching to a live stream website (like youtube or myspace) with a download option or not. Please go to the following link and complete a survey:

All answers will remain COMPLETELY anonymous. Also feel free to suggest any ideas about downloading/watching videos along with any ways to improve the comment.rating system in this blog. All information will be greatly appreciated for my final project.
Thanks

probably because people can "rate" the streaming video instead of waiting on a download?

I have found that when people are able to watch a video streamed on the website, they are far more likely to comment on the video itself and leave a rating. With the current system, the comments (in my opinion) are kind of hard to find and they require you to rate the video but you must go back to the main page. This means that if you forget and don't come back for a week, you could forget how you liked or didn't like the video. I believe that by switching to a site that streams the videos, it would entice people to leave and read comments easier since they will be plainly visible (possibly like YouTube) and it would be easier to leave a rating as well. If you really liked the video, you could then have an option of downloading it but if it was something you would not be interested in, you would not have to waste computer space for it. This is my opinion and I would love to hear what you guys/gals think.

Personally, the comment system on youtube annoys me. It encourages far too many people to make stupid, inane comments that are just completely unnecessary. Just because they are "more likely to comment" doesn't mean they will make a useful comment.
I also like the rating system here more than the one on the tube. Here, you have the star scale system which is essentially the same thing that the tube has, but you also have the Opinion rating system, which I find to be far more useful. It lets people rate on a more comprehensive level (individually rating things like video quality, synch, creativity, etc.). If I see a video with a high OP rating, I'll be more likely to check it out.
As far as forgetting to rate videos on this site goes, if you regularly download videos, forgetting won't be a problem. If you have 10 pending video ratings, then you will be forced to rate them before you can continue downloading. If you can't remember what you thought of one of those pending videos, then you probably didn't care for it much, so that should pretty well tell you how to rate it. :\
As for space issues (on the HDD), the vast majority of videos take up such little space that downloading it, even if only temporarily, really shouldn't be a problem. The quality also ends up being much higher than that of the tube and other similar communities (assuming the editor has any clue what they're doing...). (Though you can trick youtube into displaying videos in higher quality...but let's not get into that...) The download speeds are usually pretty fast around here anyway...at least for me.

Yes youtube's comment system is dumb. It's annoying when someone who isn't even into anime shows up and starts making fun of the AMV and saying everyone is a stupid nerd etc. etc. With the system this site has you have to download first which keeps anime haters from the site. I'd never forget what I thought of a video since I write it down in make notes of it in my sketchbook (yes I note it in my sketchbook). And I have a favourite editor. So yeah.

Please keep in mind that while many opinions were expressed in that thread, none of those was an "official" opinion, and nothing was definite...The Origonal Head Hunter wrote:Site's thoughts on streaming.
