Video Quality / Technical Aspects In AMV's : Discussion Line
Ya know, something occured to me today (you can thank Zero Punctuation for actually bringing this to my attention).
And no, this isn't targeted at anybody or meant to cause dramaz! :O
If a video has good quality (not HD or anything, just good, typical quality), and a good story and really good editing and looks simply amazing.... I have never in my life thought to myself: "Hey! If this had and HD or higher resoluation quality, it would make the video 10x more astounding."
But that's just me. :O
Getting To the Point: I'd like to discuss what your opinions on what video quality is suitable for viewing, and how it effects AMV's overall.
Why?: This train of though came out of a Zero Punctuation review of gaming consoles (specifically the PS3 and the necessity for Blu Ray disc reader), and several comments made over the past year to AMVs.
My Train of Thought:
Epic video. Hands down. Video quality is fine and suitable for viewing.
Wouldn't be lying if I said this isn't one of my favorite videos. Video quality is poor, sure, but it's still an epic video. :O Yet, it still pulled down the video.
I digress.... Discuss please. :O[/url]

I see that you mentioned the Blue Ray stuff coming with the Playstation 3 and X Box (don't know if it has one?!) I think that the technical aspect is always important for an AMV, but it's in my eyes not the main aspect.
Blue Ray is not standard yet and hardly anybody I know has a Blue Ray drive. I couldn't even edit with that footage, because of my crappy computer xD so this question is not relevant to me, but if someone decides to edit with Blue Ray footage then I, of course, will welcome that. But a good quality footage does not always give you a good AMV in the end
My thoughts

Good video quality does not always = good video. That being said, I like watching AMVs, and if it looks like crap it shows how little the editor really paid attention to the guides etc. At the end of the day, I do think quality matters (or else we'd all be on the tube) but not enough to make me hate a well-edited AMV.
Point in case.

To put it as simply as I can, even god-like video quality can't make a bad video good. However, good video quality can make a good video great (or at least better). My brain isn't firing on all cylinders at the moment (I just fried it working on a report for school x_x), so I can't think of a nifty example video...oh well.
As for the subject of blu-ray, I think it'll be a while before it's really a viable source to use for most people. Ignoring the fact that they have to get a blu-ray drive to rip with as well as enough space to store raw 1080p video, I'd be amused to see people trying to compress full-HD AMVs to a size that the org will accept. I mean there's like, what, 6 times the data in a full-HD image than in an SD image? I think we're gonna need some shiny new codecs. -_-
1080p = 1920x1080
SD = 720x480 or so.

In addition to the obvious comments people made above re: "good quality != good video", i'd like to add "bad quality = deleted before you know if it's a good video" for a lot of people. It's a harsh reality.

Hard one.
Epic videos can transcend visual problems, but I ask myself why the editor didn't work harder to do so. It hurts effort. Especially issues such as aspect ratio or interlacing. I'm just like... wait... whut? How could you produce a video with such great timing and technique and forget BASICS? It hurts the experience for me, but not enough to delete the video outright. I can watch Epic videos regardless of quality, although my tolerance gets lower with each passing year. The older the video is, the more slack I cut it. A 2008 epic video should not look like a 2001 epic video. I don't care what your reason is. Fix it.
