Need a new AMV hosting solution before next Sunday

Post by whiic » Thu Mar 13, 2008 4:26 pm

I can't connect to kero.animemusicvideos.org. I can't even ping it... it's like half of Finland is blocked out. Further trying would be futile. I've used DSL and GRPS modem and different computers, different FTP client software, active and passive mode, etc. Used hours of troubleshooting spread over a length of several days. It appears to be a persistent glitch so don't bother to recommending me to read the same FAQs for the tenth time, since it won't work and it'd only make me waste time I could use to find another host for amvs. If I can't even ping it, would you consider it likely that ANY means of configuration could solve it from my end?

I've been using hosts like tv.micze.net/whiic (until his HDD crashed and account was lost due to lack of back-up) then whiic.otaku-anime.net. Both are the same server, just different aliases. Now, I'm going to lose the account again, this time permanently since the server is going to be taken down. Both domains, that is.

I have a dynamic IP so I can't just give any link to my IP. I could probably use dyndns but I have no idea how it works and how the change of IP has to be handled to make the linking work to the new IP. And in addition to this, I only have a crappy DSL. 2M down, 0.5M up. That sucks. Also, if I leave any P2P application open, the available bandwidth is less than 10% of that. I don't want to dedicate my DSL line for AMV hosting alone because, face it, there'd hardly be more than few hundred megs of upload a week, probably a few gigs after new releases. Theoretically even this slow DSL is capable of around 30000 megs per week so AMV hosting alone is pretty bad use for a server. Waste of electricity.

Uploading anything to shitsites like Geocities is impossible... just having few pictures will make the website lock up due to matching daily quota so unless AMVs are smaller than 5 megs and I'd expect only 1 download per day, that's completely wortheless.

So, any news on this front? I know that at least one of the users offers hosting for HAMVs (due to .org policy for not allowing local hentai or extreme violence) but is anyone offering something similarish for those non-hentai AMVs that can't be entered to kero directly?

I can relay every upload through non-Finnish friend by first uploading them via P2P network to them, then add video information and request temporary FTP login and then give the login to that friend for him to upload to kero, then I can myself confirm when it's uploaded. This actually works but it's so darn difficult, timeconsuming and I'd be bothering other people in addition to bothering myself (also using their bandwidth in addition to my own (and to .orgs)).

So, who hosts? Outsiders, insiders, both welcome. I'm realistic so I don't need hell of a lot of monthly transfer quota... but I know 5 megs per day is never enough. "One click" filehosts are definite no. They are NEVER one-click, and they typically expire if not downloaded periodically.

Would you think dyndns solution would be otherwise feasible (but still too slow)? My IP periodically and computer I would host them from will be left unattended so if reregistering the new IP requires any sort of user intervention, it'd be a bad thing.

Otherwise I can only upload them to YT crapsite. That sucks major male genital, and I believe you agree with me on that. But I'm afraid unless I actually find a free host with no file specific expiration time and >1GB daily quota / >10 monthly quota, it's gonna be the only choice. I ain't using a credit card (and thus ain't using PayPal either) so even the smallest monthly fees become problematic. Even 0.01 dollar a month cost quite bit if I have to pay the bank as well for using their "service" for international money transfer.

Sorry, made it a long rant. I'm just getting frustrated with this fecal matter at hand.

Do you mind if skipped all the text?

You want an hosting alternativ. Mhm a free one...

Well there is a way for files <60MB.

Go to savefile.com and create an account (therefore you get emails if your links are in danger of getting deleted because of inactivity).

Upload a file.

Now you get such a link:
http://www.savefile.com/files/1437932

Click on the "Download" button and click it. You come to a new site and there is a "Download now" phrase. Rightclick on it.
You get one link like this:
http://dl1u.savefile.com/fc449f05d869ba ... /dummy.txt

tada! This is a direct download link for your file. Maybe it last forever and is not temporary? Would be nice ^^ Anyway you have at least hosting for indirect links.

If you get an email that your file gets inaktiv it´s no problem. Just start a download and abort it. Than it should be active again.
They are NEVER one-click, and they typically expire if not downloaded periodically.
solvend and solved²

That´s why I like savefile. You don´t have to type in text to be able to download stuff.
You can find me on YT under "Bauzi514". Subscribe to never miss my AMV releases. :amv:

As long as you don't need to upload a huge number of amv's, I would just stick with giving your amv to your non-Finnish friend [via whatever file-sending method like above] and getting them to upload it locally for you. It's pretty much the same amount of work. I could do one if you like...
Like I mentioned before, Local is worth the qc's.

I wonder why Finland would have trouble connecting :?:

That savefile solution is quite MacGyvered. It mainly works because the implemetation was glitchy (because they didn't intentionally want direct linking but simply failed miserably hiding it). Nothing guarantees that they won't fix this glitch. They will keep the indirect link intact but the second one could change because they never intended it to be linked to other sites.

Also, I'd need to constantly wake up the older, less accessed files so they won't fall into permanent coma. If it was once every 6 months, I could live with it... if 1 month - some inconvenience.

Even more inconvenience would be if I direct linked to files and they made some site updates that changed the direct links or used referrer URL to determine whether the file was linked from within the savefile.com or from some other domain. If either happened, I'd have to edit video information of all my videos in .org database. I've done that already several times and it never ceases to piss me of. And the more videos I make, the more annoying it becomes to fix all the links in the database.

Maybe I'll go bother random people at #amv when I need to make an upload. It's not like the friend who know how .org works are always online on the hubs I hang in. #amv always got people in it.

Temporary login was not only for one login but also for one file, right? Could several upload requests be made before confirming the older one? I just thought if I could queue the uploads, make a list of which amv uses which login, zip the list and all amv into a file and send via IRC DCC transfer to someone who uploads them all. But if it needs to be confirmed before next one is requested, then... it's gonna take longer.

The good thing is, at least it shouldn't need updating any longer. And quick comments... they are valuable.

Still, if anyone know of an external server I can access directly, I'd prefer it over kero. (But kero over savefile. And savefile over rapidshare. And rapidshare over malware infested MegaUpload.)

Talk to your ISP. This could be a case of null-routing, which you may have to chase down. Your ISP should be able to help you.
