I know this may not mean a hell of a lot but there are new directors this year. One of the key things we have been focusing on is keeping things on schedule and putting several plans into effect to prevent what has occured in the past (not just last year) from happening again. Including but not limited to there being at least 4 copies on site in 4 different peoples hands as well as Harddrive back up and (if I can manage it) DV-Cam tape of the videos that make the show) The current plan is to have all of this done no later than one week (preferably 2 but I am a realist) before we even get on site for con.
Also, if you don't go; he'll punch you.

No seriously, it's part of the new Con "Attend or die" policy.

To be honest I considered not going but I know too many people who only come down to my neck of the woods for this con to not go. And my beef doesn't lie with the AMV contest so much as it does the rest of the con at this point.

x2

The AMV contest problems were bad (let's be honest), but the con itself as a whole had FAR more disappointment in the two years I've attended which I can't forgive.

Jeez, 3 months and I just started, lol. Well, we'll see. I've only been going since 05 and definitely agree there are problems, but I guess I'm not that bugged by them. I really only attend the AMVs and Idol if I feel like it. Haven't seen a concert I'd want to go to yet (still waiting for Mai Yamane and the Seatbelts). Good luck to Michael and Anneke this year, kinda hard to inherit a possible ticking time bomb, but here's hoping you can defuse it.

For the first poster (which I think it is in poor taste to have the first post be "what are the prizes" but that's just me, meh), in past years the prizes were pretty much kept secret until the awards ceremony, some years even being picked up in the dealer hall at con (which worked last year, as J and K picked up prizes that matched the winning vids). Anyways, I personally don't do it for the prize. It's nice but I'm more interested in the crowd. I recently took best upbeat at Ohayocon with a vid that I didn't think would make anything and now I wish I could have been there to see the reaction. My only prize was a small statue I guess you could call it (a rectangular piece of resin with "Best Upbeat" on it) and that was fine for me.

Anyways, enough of my soapbox. I've got 2, hopefully 3 vids in the works for expo. as long as I can get them finished. Entered 1 in 2006 and 2 in 2007 (one a remake of my 2006 vid) and none have gotten in yet, but as they say, if at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.....or something.

Oh hey, I was about to enter when I remembered they still owe me $100 from like 2005.

(Their rules stated that if a sponsor put up a prize for an award, the prize would be mailed. However, they didn't send me the prize and they didn't refund it to the sponsor.)
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

I will warn you now. You will probably not like this answer. For that I apologize, but it is the only real answer I can give.

When James and Katy left. All records and such went with them.
While you have my deepest sympathies, we have no way to verify or rectify this issue. The reason being the events you describe would have been 3 years ago under the other Directors. I had heard rumors of this issue or one like it but as I was not on AMV staff at that time, let alone a director I have no first or even second hand knowledge.

However, possible situations such as the one you allege above are the exact reason we included safe guards in the rules to prevent such things. While this doesn't help you in the issue from 3 years ago, it will prevent such things from possibly happening in the future.

Specifically I am referring to:
" In the event that the third party prize is a cash prize any such prizes are to be administered by the offering party and will NOT be held by or given to the recipient by the AMV Contest Directors or ANY Anime Expo® Staff member (the only exception being if the awarding party is an Anime Expo® Staff member)"
from the additional Categories section.

I am right there with you in not wanting to have things go awry. But I also know that at this point they are just words in the eyes of most. so all I can say is I will do my best and time will tell.

hey, just the fact that you're well aware of everything going on and have a plan for it makes me feel a lot more at ease, so thank you for that.

btw, will we be receiving confirmation emails when our vids arrived? i know it's early but i already sent mine in last week and haven't heard anything. again I KNOW THAT'S EARLY :P but i'm understandably curious ^_^

Not a problem and a perfectly valid question. :)
Yes, as we receive entries and check them the entrants will be notified (email is the preffered method) that we have received them. At this point we are checking the box twice a week and intend to increase the frequency of checking it as we get further along and more entries arrive.

I echo Vlad's recommendation, make sure you have a copy of your entires on you at the contest, in both file format and playable DVD.
