I started editing with sources I came upon on the radio, or heard because of my proximity to the band. This meant I often was the first on the org to enter particular bands, because I'd do a video a few weeks after they started heavy rotation on the air.
Because of the particular way I must get an idea in order to see it to fruition, I can't really go hunting for a song to a fit a concept. There has been an exception, but in most cases, I somehow hear a song (either by radio, go to a show, like the band already so just bought their new CD, etc) and automatically if an idea exists, it will immediately start an internal storyboard process. Much like I feel often times my fiction writes itself when the characters are stubborn jerks (Daniel Mariner, I'm talking to you!), many of the scenes choose themselves inside my head based on my memory of the series as I listen to the song. So the more likely I am to hear a song, and hear it more than once, the more likely I'll be inspired.
Also, it's possible that a song I consider a favorite will not inspire me until I see a series my mind thinks makes sense with it. I could hear it a million times, and if I haven't seen the anime that goes with it, I won't want to edit with it just because I like it.
Looking at my own list:
2001: SR-71, Nine Days, Lifehouse, Blessed Union of Souls, Kenny Logins
2003: Bowling For Soup
2005: Semisonic
2006: Wicked Soundtrack
2007: Porcupine Tree, globe
2008: Natalie Imbruglia
SR-71 is a pop-punk band from the early 2000s. At the time, they did not have a lot of air time, but they had enough. Right Now was their big hit in 2000~2001. I remember one of my favorite early videos to that song was a Love Hina video about Naru. I entered both the band and What's a Mess into the database.
Nine Days is a light pop band from the early 2000s. Story of a Girl had tons of air time. Couldn't escape it. Had to make a video about Utena. I entered both the band and the song into the database.
Lifehouse is a Christian pop band active for the last ten years or so. Hanging by a Moment received tons of air time. I entered both the band and the song into the database.
Blessed Union of Souls is a band that was active throughout the 1990s and popular into my high school years (1997-2000). That's The Girl I've Been Telling You About is off their 1999 album that is more well known for what actually got airtime: Hey Leonardo (She Likes Me For Me). This is the only song I have ever used in a non-MEP, non-Iron Chef release where I started with the concept first. I wanted to make a cute shoujo ai video about Tomoyo and Sakura from CCS, and I already had an idea of what I wanted the lyrics to say. An internet search pulled up this song, and it happened to be very close to what I was thinking the narrative should be. I entered both the band and the song into the database.
Kenny Logins, 1980s soundtrack king. Danger Zone needs no explanation. Especially not to jet fighters. I neither entered the artist nor the song. I think Kusoyaro did.
Bowling for Soup has been around since 1994. They were a local band in Denton (a suburb of Dallas west of my suburb, Frisco) and so I heard them both in person and occasionally on local radio. In 2002, Girl All The Bad Guys want was put into rotation and the band skyrocketed to popularity out of relative backwater Texas obscurity. The Dallas radio station, The Edge, got to be the first in the nation to play the song that would launch their career, as the DJs were big fans of the Soup. The Soup has a tendency to segue into a new song by using an old song, especially in music videos. They performed such a segue with The Bitch Song, which is what I felt adequately described one of the most hated anime characters of all time: Lynn Minmay. This song has the distinction of being the only one I have ever asked for permission to use by the band. Happily, they also hate Minmay, and agreed. I entered the band and the song into the database.
Semisonic is an alternative rock band formed in 1995 famous for their release of "Closing Time" in 1998. That was the year I discovered Kimagure Orange Road. I always felt that the narration fit very well with the series. The song was heavily overplayed, and honestly, All About Chemistry is probably a much better album. RYS entered the band into the database. Nanase entered the song into the database. This a wonderful band with few entries. It deserves more attention. Also, three out of the 10 entries are KOR! :3
The Wicked Soundtrack was heavily played at my workplace over Christmas 2005. Over and over and over and over and over. I could not escape it. So once my mind had settled on a concept of Utena/Anthy as Glenda/Elpheba... I could do nothing but submit. I entered neither the musical nor the song into the database... Kitsuner, perhaps?
Porcupine Tree was involved in an iron chef. I know nothing about the band, and I wasn't found of the song.
globe is my favorite Japanese group. They formed in 1995. I learned about them from a Japanese exchange student in 1998. They are my favorite non-English band, and I have legitimately purchased the majority of their discography. This is a good example of how until I had seen Nodame Cantabile I had no inspiration from On the way to YOU. As soon as I did and listened to the song after... Kenshin8518 entered the band into the database. I entered the song into the database. Doki has made a video using this band.
Natalie Imbruglia is arguably my favorite singer of all time (not including lead vocalists of bands, which would probably fall to Morrissey). I instantly fell in love with her voice when she released Torn in 1998 and it got heavy round on VH1, MTV, and radio. I especially loved the format of the actual music video as well. Her work history is quite older, including a stint on the Aussie show Neighbors, but only the Burlies really know her before the late nineties. I cannot be sure who entered her into the database, but it looks like Paladine gets credit for earliest video with one of her songs in 1999. Maison Otaku's Utena video to Torn was the first non-DBZ music video I ever saw.
Sources I am currently working with include: Eisley, Zykos, Prozzak, and O-town.
