Re-release 8th Anniversary Special Edition Director's Cut

Post by CrazyLee » Tue Jan 15, 2008 4:16 pm

(no, this has nothing to do with South Park)

So I was watching some AMVs, and I stumble upon this one in my collection, and I notice it's not a bad effort but it has some glaring errors, most noteably some orphan frames and bad audio.

And since I have a video editing program open, I decide to clean up the AMV a little by removing the orphan frames. But I have this obsessive-compulsive perfectionist neat-freakish streak which compells me to fix things I see wrong, as if I have to prove to the world I can do it (it also whispers in my ear and tells me to kill people).

So I went and fixed a bunch of other things with the video in an obsessive rage. It took me a few hours (the deletion of the orphan frames took 10 minutes in comparison).

So I present to you, the Re-re-re-release 8th Anniversary Special Edition Director's Cut. Now with all actors digitally replaced with Ewoks, and all guns digitally replaced with walkie talkies.

Changes:

1. All orphan frames (all 4-5 of them) have been deleted with no adverse effect to the timing of the video or the audio.

2. At the end of the movie, the video of the ship accelerating doesn't match the audio of the Enterprise going to warp. I changed that by moving the acceleration clip around and slowing it down to match the sound.

3. When Picard says "Space, the final frontier", Gene blinks rapidly a few times. This was fixed.

4. The show's title screen looks like it says "Outlaw Star - Trek: The Next Generation Hero". I think he intended it to say "Outlaw Star Trek: The Next Generation Hero". I was going to change it in photoshop, but couldn't find the font he used, so I ended up using the official Next Generation Title Font.

5. I have a clean copy of the intro theme, but the sound in the AMV appears to be accelerated slightly, and I was unable to sync it properly. So I gave up. No fixed audio in this version. Someone with more experience can play with that one. Good luck. :o

I used only what I had here and did not use any additional clips from the show, which I don't have.

I did this just for my own amusement. I probably ended up breaking every ethical and copywright and artistic rule and moral code out there, and if I did, I deserve a resounding boot to the head. If Gene Starwind 21122 were to see this, would he worship me, or slaughter me in ritual sacrafice? I have no idea.

A point I want to make with this is that it's not too hard to get rid of annoying nuisances like orphan frames, subtitles, audio and video that isn't synced, lip flap, and such. It only takes a little more of your time, and it's worth it to try to make the AMV as perfect as possible. If it's this easy for me, a total n00b to the art of making AMVs (but not such a n00b when it comes to basic video editing 101), then it should be easy for all the you-tube n00bs as well. So stop making half-assed videos!

That is all. *face melts and head explodes*

Shouldn't this go in Announcements?

I don't think I'm announcing anything... not being the original maker of the video it's not like I could replace the old one with the new one, and I would not even do that without the original creator's permission.

Oh, I guess I missed that part. Didn't realize which video this was.

He'd worship himself and make life a living hell for all of us at AWA 2009.

Make sure he doesn't see this.

Uuummm... first off let me say I did read your review that you left me. This video was one of the videos I made in my first year of editing in 2003. Yes, I had orphan frames but did I care at the time. No. If you have seen my more recent works starting with Pain of War in 2004 that's when I started editing better. At first I was using MGI Video Wave 4 for that is all I could get at the time.

It's not like this idea hasn't been done before with the video I made. Before this one there was one released I believe a few months earlier. However it is up to the editor of the video to go back and fix his/ her mistakes if he or she wants. After looking at the video a couple months ago in 2007 as I was looking through some of my older works, that I might want to do a remake of this year, I knew it was sub-standard. I felt there was no need to go back after seeing what was done in AMV Hell 3 with RolltheStamepede's parody.

No I'm not upset this isn't the first time this has happended. I would have wished that you sent me a message before hand to talk about this some more before "correcting" my amv flaws.

I know I'm far from being a pro editor. I don't want to use the terms good and great those have different standards and meanings to everyone. I have to say I think I'm getting better as I go along. I have not taken a class in college yet for video editing but will in the future.

@trythil - I have been almost non-existant here on the org for the past year. I know as a person and an editor in the past I was somewhat annonying. I know I have flaws and I'm trying to work on them to become a better person. I'm not saying you guys have to like me but why do you feel the need to say stuff about me behind my back. I'm planning to be down at AWA in 2008 I know I'll meet up with a few friends down there and that'll be great, but if you guys aren't willing to give me a chance to show I have changed then I don't know whatelse I can do.

@LeeKitten - After re-reading your post I understand you are trying to make a point about how things can be fixed up and you were using my video as a comparison. I appreciate your feedback on the video and believe me I had already taken everything you said into consideration even way before the your review was written but didn't feel it was necessary for me to go back and remake it.

When I read through your post the first time I read it wrong as it was a flaming post and not a "Hey newbs look it is not that hard to fix these simple mistake post".

I didn't mean to jump out at you if that what it seems like. I wish they had an edit button in this thread, but trythil post added fuel to the fire. I appologize for anything that could be misinterprated as sign of anger or fustration.

Then the other reason I may have seen fusterated is because I had something like this happen back in 2004 when somebody used almost exactly similar scene the same exact concept and story of one my videos and another editors video and just timed it better. Then entered it into a contest and saw it at the screening thinking "what the heck is going on here?" So that whole thing was going through my head again as well. We got that situation taken care of and that's behind us.

This could become a treatise on remastering videos:

I personally believe that you should remaster without permission only when the editor is unknown, incommunicado, or willfully retired and absent.

If the editor is still around, you should ask before remastering. There are a few videos I wish to remaster, the ones I'd be willing to actually do would be ones where I could not contact the original editor.
