Where has the community gone?

I think it would serve the site if a lot of people took a step back and realized this is a fan community run by nerds AND THATS OK. Its not dreadfully serious.
The administration seems to be pretty bloated and overworked right now and there is a very simple solution to fix that:
The way a-m-v.org is run is very "proper". There is quite a large bureaucracy, no single person is in charge, and whenever people have problems, they are thrown down into the gelatinous gut of our diffused shadow administration. /dramatic
I think the admins should start acting like they RUN the fucking place. Stop being so damn concerned about being fair and just, and start getting things done. Ban idiots from the forums, don't waste time and energy modding posts, just BAN people. Furthermore, the "mission statement" of this site has been COMPLETELY irrelevant for years now.
IT IS LUDICROUS TO TRY TO CATALOG EVERY ANIME MUSIC VIDEO EVER MADE.

IT IS LUDICROUS TO TRY TO CATALOG EVERY ANIME MUSIC VIDEO EVER MADE.
This was a valid effort to be a home base to lovely fan movement, but there are GAZILLIONS of amvs out there now, and there will only be more and more and more as time and technology move forward. The old mission of the org has been replaced by yew toob.
Why don't we just throw out all the glut of this website (that was nobly built with the intention of servicing hundreds of thousands of people), and just start actively serving the COMMUNITY that still hangs around? How many active AMVers are there? 300? 500?
Let the community decide what it needs. Theres really about 20 people who set the trends for everyones editing. What do THEY want to do with the sight? If any of this sounds elitist, or exclusive, it is, and it has gotten to that point. The forums suck because they are riddled with idiots who use our site as a fucking tech support dump.
FUCK
THAT
The internet is no place for a bloated democracy. A lean, mean, oligarchy is the best bet for this sight. If this post sounds dramatic, it isn't, just read it in a falsetto voice.

When I first got here, I acted like a total idiot and wasn't well accepted.. now I have people calling me god here and have a lot of good friends. If they went off just banning people for not acting right, right away, they would of missed out on great people like me. I'd mention others that did the same, but some of them may still not be well received though I find them to be cool and a great piece of this absolutely great community. But the butt hurts that show up every now and then like to have long pointless derailing speeches like yours. I'll say I do not agree with most of what you have said Beowulf

You're taking it too far. Obviously the admins are decent people and have a VAST amount of experience with human behavior on the internet. I was speaking more to the fact that most people in charge are more than qualified to judge if a person is contributing to the sight, in one way or another. This isn't some final solution cleansing, I'm talking about.
That being said, if you come to a forum and act like an idiot, and don't contribute anything, you should be gone.

I agree with what you're saying Beo - When it comes up i'm always pissed that when it says in the forum rules that certain things are banable offenses and people are not banned for them (even temporarily).

Of course you couldn't, being that your mind is made of concrete.Deaf Jester wrote:Imagine that.x_rex30 wrote:When I first got here, I acted like a total idiot and wasn't well accepted.. now I have people calling me god here and have a lot of good friends. Though yeah, I am called god quite a bit.. at least by more than 20 people on this site.. want links? "I can do that I just don't want to" would be the same as your reasoning "I don't need prof, I already know what's up with my absolutist concrete mind that likes to make concrete conclusions on things that don't have concrete evidence"
I love you. Come over here and give me a kiss.

... it sounds sarcastic. the administration is a few admin, and a handful of mods. if we see something wrong, we try to fix it right there. if we're not sure what to do or want a second pair of eyes, we'll talk to each other before taking action. if something obvious goes unfixed for a while, it's more likely no agents are on, or theyre not reading in that section of the forums.Beowulf wrote:There is quite a large bureaucracy, no single person is in charge, and whenever people have problems, they are thrown down into the gelatinous gut of our diffused shadow administration...

i won't speak on behalf of the other agents because we all have our own ways of handling things - but as far as being lenient towards noobs, trolls, and other forms of aggravating people, i do let some spam and crap slide, because we, as a community, have to learn to deal with it. instead of waiting for an agent to ban a newb, tell him what he's doing wrong. if the entire community is expecting the administration to wipe up their asses, it'd be a crapload of work on us, which i don't have any inclination of picking up. this isn't so much about elitism as it is coddling.
i expect someone's going to bring up kickass, the troll who flooded amv announcements with amvs that took 20 minutes to make. we could have banned him for trolling the forum with low quality videos. but if we had, it would create the sense that there's a minimum effort or quality requirement for announcing the videos. this would work for an elitist community, which you (beo) are proposing, but the org is just not intended for that. obviously, the org is not going to catalog every single instance of anime dubbed with music, but the org will be open to any AMV (that follows site rules), and any editor who wants to announce their AMV can.
the concern that kickass was flooding spots on page 1 was brought up too, so we pitched a new rule to avoid that. would it have been easier and quicker to just ban him? yes. instead we warned him about the new rule. he has since followed it. he still makes shitty videos in 20 minutes. instead of relying on the administration to take care of him, any forum member can choose to try to find a way to communicate with him, or ignore him.
finally, regarding an elitist community, that's what studios are for. invite all the elite trend-setting editors and community members to hypeodermic. you'll have your elitist community AND you'll be in charge of the site (i'm not trying to be sarcastic or witty here).
