Most of the MADs I know are made with static images. They concentrate much more on colours, 3D animation/camera motion and effects than AMVs do.

This is a great place to check out MADs in HQ:

A MAD sole purpose in being is to make even Ayumix look tame in comparison and to make Decoy look like a talentless loser. It is full of so many boring ass effects that the wondertwins quit because they just couldn't match it. The footage of your typical MAD is totally irrelevant. You could replace the anime character with stick figures fucking and no one would notice. Much like bukakke, tentacle rape, and selling used lolita undies a MAD reminds us all that Japan is a society of morally degenerate perverts devoted to getting revenge for the nuclear bombs by exporting their culture to us.

Simple: "MAD's are Fluid-Motion Caught-on-the-TV-Screens that Fool your eye's into believing that an Animation is Real enough to touch-it."
Basically with that you just said that amv's can not and will not be capable of using fluid 2.5D/3D motion. As if one dos pull it off dos it instantly turn them into a M@D?

this has been my definition of the two

I've always seen it (partly due to the definitions given shortly after they started getting really big here), as mostly a difference of terminology used by two different video making scenes, with MAD - or M@D - simply being the term which originated out of the Japanese scene for describing itself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAD_Movie

I take issue with the deeming of MADs more or less being parodies, though. There's too many counterexamples for that to be all that true.

Generally speaking (much like the definition of anime), it's used in the AMV scene to mostly designate the highly-technical still image videos produced by Japanese editors, however I've seen normal AMVs labeled as MADs on Japanese P2P networks (such as Engel). So it has the same amount of haziness to it as cross-cultural use of 'anime' or 'manga' does. Something that looks like a typical still image MAD but which was edited by a Westerner probably would be deemed as 'MAD-like' by the various AMV communities but whether it would be seen that way by the Japanese community, I don't know.
