er question O.<

Post by nightspiritwings » Thu Jan 03, 2008 1:06 am

Ok, I was wondering how to do a few effects...which have already probaly been asked a million times but I dont know

anyways,

first one is in this music vid:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WbUKr08yaPM

*just replace *boochsack.com with youtube.com in the link*

The two effects I was wondering how to do is first the paneling with the split three way screen, and split two way screen...I kinda know how to do masking but...not really, and well cookie cutter I cant figure out...call me a noob whatever, I am new to this :P
the effect in the music video is between 4secs ish to around 18 secs-ish

Second effect is the paneling going across a clip underneath it...between 24sec-ish to 40secish...anyone know how to do this that would be able to help with a few screenshots or something? thanks muchly :)

also...when masking so that you can cut out a character from the clip like 3.00mins where it's naruto...how do we clip it out like that? I can mask it...but wouldn't you have to do it for EACH individual move? there must be a easier way

You can do just about all of that with masking and filtering. You manipulate the mask points over time to create motion. As for the rotoscoping... there are various ways to do the masking, but all it is is masking. Surprise - some people spend a lot of time making videos.

why do you always have to be so rude/sarcastic i'm very new to this, and I KNOW amvs take a heck of a lot of time, i'm not an idiot....and if you read I did say I know it kinda has to be with masking, just not sure how to go about it.

can Someone else, who wants to be helpful please help with some screenshots perhaps on some tips for the questions I have?

you didn't specify what program you are using but I'ma jump into Vegas since thats what that guy on the tube used... I recognize that Portals transition anywhere :3

That's quite a few layers and yea he probably did/could use a separate mask for each part that moves, or he could have set up the keyframes on the masks as well.

I'm pretty sure I've posted this before but here it is again (the search tool is your friend especially since you KNOW what it is you are looking for)

here is another guide on masking with Vegas

for masking out characters you WILL have to set up the keyframes every frame (unless you are looking to do a still frame, then it will take only once) and yes it will take a long time, you can use the "Arrow tool" to move the anchors on each frame... it takes a very long time, but that makes it a lot easier.

Truthfully that video hurts the eyes. There's way too much going on in that and I didn't even watch it all the way through...

Also not everyone on the org is going to hand out advice without a bit of sarcasm... it's something thats pretty easy to get used to.

I actually wasn't being sarcastic. I know a lot of people don't believe just how much time goes into doing stuff like that. In fact, i was having a conversation with another editor about how she was trying to explain this to her boyfriend and he wasn't buying any of it while i was posting here.

right, thanks for that :) I did look at the guide for vegas, the question though I have is the split screen three way effect...is that just tons of masking?
again thanks for the help :)

and well in my opinion it is not necessary to be sarcastic OR rude to someone who is new to all this, everyone learns different and at thier own paces...

and the other one I just cant figure out is how to make the clips run across the screen over another clip...between 24sec-ish to 40secish...anyone know how to do this that would be able to help with a few screenshots or something? thanks muchly Smile

and the cookie cutter effect..O.o for some reason it doesn't add anything to my actual clip...ive followed the tutorial on vegas...and I drag it onto the clip but nothing happens

if you weren't being sarcastic or rude then I apologize :) it's just hard for me to come out here with tons of peopel that know all kinds of things about vegas and premiere and I dont, so I feel like people are going to attack since i'm a noob at this :p

I also learn a bit different than most, and I sometimes have to see exactly how one thing is done in order to learn it pernamently :)

but thanks then

for a 3 panel what you do is cut out the parts you want on each clip either with cookie cutters or the mask tool or whatever, and stack them one on top of the other... so yea 3 layers and a bit of masking...

when you render the cookie cutter bit is the effect there?

and as for moving the cookie cutters as i said use the key frames..

it's pretty much the same using the mask tool... right click on a path and choose "select path and you should be able to move it around on the screen and use the key frames pretty much the same way as shown above..

ooo thanks :) but how do you make it move across the screen? wait...nvm I think I got it :p

other question...there is a effect in one of decoy ops vids, where it does the three paneling it's like a moving clip, and then freezes on top screen 1st panel, then second freezes and then third *while the clip is still going* i'm guessing that's just masking to? and can you add borders in the masking?

the screencap tells you how to make it move, you set the key frames and vegas will fill in the rest :/

you can't add borders to masks in vegas (at least not without being crafty as far as i can tell - though you can add borders to cookie cutters)

and Decoy uses after effects to make his more recent videos.

if you wanna create effects like that you gotta learn to think in layers:
