Streaming video requires certain sacrifices. The nature of streaming limits the compression options in ways that a download does not. Thus, to avoid inflating the size of the video file, knocking down quality in some fashion is pretty much the only option.

Nevermind the other technical problems, like the limited amount of bandwidth available to the Org, the way that streaming videos would kill this in no time flat, and the problem of transcoding every locally stored video to something streamable.

Hell, nevermind the huge bootstrapping problem.

The technical hurdles are very high, and there's little discernible benefit. So, the question is, what have I missed?

^ above reminder.
Plus you know the whole "someone stole my amv" problem the org faces nowadays. It's would be worse enough for our amvs to be stolen and put on youtube but even MORE terrible to have your own amv stolen and put on the org.

Probably not seeing as how at this site there is an actual recourse users could take that is not available on youtube.

I'd be all for it in terms of a quick method of previewing videos before downloading but, as Kalium mentioned, there are too many issues with the implementation.

x2. Streaming would bring much unwanted attention to the org. Its already bad enough that we have to get rid of boochshack links and take down certain amv's with songs in it. We are here to show off our work in the biggest quality and profficiency we can. Allowing people to stream would make everything many have slaved hours over, pretty meaningless.

In the end:
Streaming = Lazyness
Lazyness = Worthless AMV's
Worthless AMV's = No point for the org to exist.

...and put on the org.
I don't sympathize with anyone dumb enough to do that.
they'd just be flamed to hell and back
Everything came from nothing, therefore everything is nothing.

There's nothing to worry about.

the difference between "stealing and putting on the tube" and "stealing and putting on the org" is the fact that the mods here CAN do something about people posting videos on the org (bannination/video deletion/etc)

one of the main reasons we have the word filter is because the mods here cannot do anything about what happens on the tube, so there is really no point in people coming here to complain about "video theft" happening there. (yes Bashar I'm using those terms loosely) Youtube is not their site, they have no control over what happens there.

however if you mod drop box a video entry listed here where someone has "stolen your footage/video" then a mod can remove it.

sorry for the double post... but as for the topic at hand. I much prefer downloading a video over streaming it... cause then I can watch it any time I want and I don't have to keep coming back to the org to kill bandwidth and see it.
