Voted on by fans? Are these the same VCAs i'm thinking of? The ones that a small minority of registered forum-goers that are alerted to the contest by friends that want them to vote for them are half the vote? I'm not against the VCAs or anything, but it's delusional to think of them as anything but that.

All I'm saying is that for now, yes. In the future, no.BasharOfTheAges wrote:Voted on by fans? Are these the same VCAs i'm thinking of? By proposing a 'fix', you're implying that something is broken.Koopiskeva wrote:As for the comment about the VCA's being 'broken' - I never said such a thing. I implied it was flawed, just like any other contest - but the difference is that some contests do try to balance it out by having both an audience-based vote and a judge-based vote. So, its not a replacement for the VCAs that I'm looking for, but a complement to provide a different viewpoint on which videos should/could be winners.
Let me propose something simpler: compile a list of all the videos you think haven't gotten enough attention in the past year, and post it.
There. Simple. No mess, no fuss, no need to code a new system, and no logistical headaches. No additional complexity, and your 'different viewpoint' is provided without issue.
Or is it the visibility of the VCAs that you're after, rather than just a 'different viewpoint'?

I like the idea of a judge voting. I think really great judge make it sometimes better then viewer votings, because the like the person so the give it points... but i think the VCA has also one great thing, because you see what many want to see and which is the winner for the most...

This isn't a 'fix' because it is not replacing the VCAs - merely adding to it :\Kalium wrote: By proposing a 'fix', you're implying that something is broken.

And yes, I want the visibility of the VCAs, I thought I was clear about that.. I want the contest to be a complement to the VCAs - to run side-by-side with it - to serve as a different viewpoint from 'judges' as opposed to the 'viewers.' Hence JCA. And for it to be taken seriously, or at least followed by people as some kind of authority in what's considered to be the 'best' in the year, I want it to be in the running alongside the VCA. Just as there is an audience/viewer's choice award in conventions, there are judge's choice awards given - does that take away from each other? Not really - its just a difference in opinion by those with varying levels of experience.
Yes, I could just make one sponsored by me or RDS without any backing from the org - but that wouldn't have the same impact on the community because it is not directly involved with what is considered to be the 'heart' of the online community. Therefore, less authoritative. The only backing I wish for would be promotion - no other involvement really be needed at this time.

Look everyone, I'm not against the judges idea nor some of the points brought up here as discussions are always good thing and people have brought up some great dicussions indeed. Also Koop, I am not commenting in a bad way on your concept or ideas as they have merit as I mentioned, but more of the constant griping on how the VCAs are done.
It pains me to keep hearing that people think that the members who vote aren't worthy enough to judge AMVs... Honesty, what wrong with that? I voted in the past and I'm not worthy and many otyhers I know? How does everyone come to that conclusion? They actually know all the members? Granted, many fans vote for popular AMVs, I not saying that's not the case
It's the orgs way of finding out what the members like or think is the best and frankly a lot of the choices were quite good from last few years ... And in terms of how many vote, it pretty much the norm at even conventions that a smaller minority vote (actually, I was quite suprises the amounts of votes that were case in the semi and finals, more then you think). Even at Otakon which has been doing that for YEARS and non one is complaining as much there...
And honestly, I've seen a LOT of contests where the judges picked the same exact videos that won in the VCAs in several cases, so the popular ones win anyway in manny cases (EVEN AT AWA in Pro and Expo you'll find several winners matched up in the VCAs)

Stop arguing about how this fits in with the Viewer's Choice Awards and just do it.
The inevitable bitching will at least give me something on which to use up this last twenty gigabytes of free hard drive space: I expect that there will be many threads generated by your actions, and a few of them will have to be archive-worthy.
Also, we may see some cool new banners and image macros come out of the mess.
Always look on the bright side of life.

I'm kinda confused. I've read the whole thread, and never once read anything Koop has posted, saying anything against how the VCA's are run, or saying that anything is wrong with them at all (other then that ALL contests are flawed, or that there are people who end up complaining with the outcome...both of which are true). I think I read one comment from one member against the VCA's, other then that, no one is saying that they're wrong or need to be "fixed."
He's not saying that what the VCA's are now isn't good enough, he just had an idea to add another aspect to the contest....How is that ever a bad thing? A compliment. Nothing more or less. That's not suggesting that the VCA's need something new and different, it's just an idea that could be cool.
It seems like people are jumping instantly into the defensive like he's saying something is wrong with them, but he's not, it's just an idea to add to them. Stop and take a step back, it's not an attack, it's just a discussion of something that could be cool...
I would never agree to replace the VCA's with a panel of judges, but to add a secondary aspect, with a panel of judges, juding the semi-finalists as well, would be interesting to see how it turns out in comparison to a fan vote. *shrugs*
At least that's what I've gathered from everything said...

Dangit dad you need better reading comprehension in your old age. What I am saying is that I don't think it'll take that many nominations for a video to make semi-finalists. With 20+ of them and my estimates of how many people actually participate, I wouldn't be surprised if < 20 nominations = semi finalist which I think is a bit sparse given how many members and creators there are.Vlad G Pohnert wrote: actually, I was quite suprises the amounts of votes that were case in the semi and finals, more then you think
In any case, like trythil says, I think you should just do it and damned be the consequences Jay. Yes you should take these things into account, but he's right...people will bitch regardless. I for one look forward to the ensuing drama
