I want to feel something when I watch an AMV. If the creator is good at synching the source and the lyrics, someone who's never seen the anime can get something out of it.

Effects are also important, too many can make the video unwatchable.

No, not "too many", but the wrong use of effects.

I lump most of the technical stuff (audio, video quality, sync, etc.) with the proper mood-inducing enthralling experience you get from those great works of art that give you goosebumps from merely experiencing them and call that "execution" - It's not really a ranking, they either are all there or not. If they're all there it's really good, if not, it's varying degrees of fail. Those degrees of fail aren't all that important to go into when the purpose of the thread was about ranking what makes things good though.

No, I don't think so.

It's not even on this site. I find it more inspiring than most
of the org's "top ten".

you can have one without anime (original animation)

you can have one without video (COKIS2, failing that this one thing trythil did.)

but i have yet to see one without music.

so I still stand by my "music is the most important".

everything else is trivial.

That depends entirely on your definition of music. We've had a few videos that are simply set to noise (Conet?) or dialog (like in music-less trailers).

I remember one with a Full Metal Jacket dialogue (which was great):
no music. Then again, I don't consider it an AMV (neither are GMVs
and MMVs, although there are great examples of those too). They
all have video though, as long as there is a sequence of images.
