What makes an action or sports video memorable?

Post by PaperIsland » Wed Dec 12, 2007 7:24 pm

So, I've been editing an AMV to the boxing anime Hajime no Ippo. I'm pretty happy with the result so far and people I've showed it to have enjoyed it. However... I can't help but wonder what makes an action or sports AMV rise above just being a few minutes of entertainment and become something truly memorable (I don't mean deep and philosophical necessarily, just memorable with high review value).

I'd appreciate others thoughts on this. Mainly I'd like to hear your thoughts if you've seen an action AMV which has had a lasting impression on you and you feel like you can describe specifically why it affected you strongly.

(Note: This is not the recommended action videos thread. Your description of the video should take priority over the video itself. I'm also more interested in specific attributes/moments than posts that say "this video has really good overall sync." Be open to discussion/questions on points you make.)

Also, please note I'm not looking for general trends that you look for in action videos (as sunwukong86's post endeavors), but for specific elements of one particular video which have made an impression on you.

A reason for the fight. Few things bore me quicker than people punching each other for what appears to be no reason at all.

Pace control.

I really don't want to be watching an AMV where it looks like it's on a sugar high.

You don't make a memorable "sports video". You make an AMV
which happens to have sports and action in it. What makes it
memorable is whether it can convey an emotion other than
"well, it looks cool". This applies to any type of video.

Yes. Which is why I clarified with:

I was hoping for specific examples, not general comments such as "explosions" or "sync."
