Varies from person to person, I think. Possibly when you can look at their music videos and see less cliches then the number you can count on two hands. Cliches, I think, are different from mistakes, because once a newbie slowly becomes "accustomed" to seeing a bunch of different music videos, what works, what doesn't, and what's been done a million different times by a million different people, that's when they seek to be more creative. Once they succeed...well, then, I think that's when they've made the switch (or are in the process of making it) from "newbie" to "pro."
