Ok, I got the Video compressed to h264 mp4, the audio is AAC and I got the subtitles typed out like this:

Code: Select all

01
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
Do you feel the earth shaking?

02
00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:07,000
Do you see the smoke up on the horizon?

03
00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:11,000
Can you hear the drumming?
[hope thats correct]

And I downloaded the mkvtoolnix-2.1.0.tar file. I unpacked the stuff in it..but now I got a problem..There are only files my computer doesnt recognize.

There is a file named "INSTALL", but it doesnt even have a file ending...

What exactly do I have to do?

(and another problem: I just renamed the "INSTALL" file to "INSTALL.exe" and tried opening it like that..but it didnt work.. now it wont let me delete the file anymore..any idea what I can do about that? <.<)

.. Lenix, Windows -or- MAC ... TAR is usually Lenix, BIN is usually MAC and .EXE is usually Windows ...... you might have grabbed the wrong the wrong files

.. if using Windows, they will be in a .ZIP file 8-)

You need the mkvtoolnix-2.1.0-unicode.exe file under the Windows section. The stuff in the TAR archive is source code - you'd need a compiler to assemble it into something you could use.

Linux, and I feel the need to clarify that tarballs are usually uncompiled, if not always uncompiled. You'd have to make, make install, and ./configure. What you mean is a packing system for a program, such as an rpm or a deb. David can probably correct any errors I've made. I haven't used Linux consistently since I was in college.

The only thing I would suggest for your consideration would be using AAC over Vorbis. Both have great quality and recent builds of Nero AAC are generally better than the custom Vorbis builds. Also it means with using H.264 and AAC, if someone should wish to convert the MKV to MP4, they can do so without quality loss or re-encoding the audio, just they wouldn't have subtitles in the MP4 unless they intentionally hard subbed it (for me it wouldn't matter for music). It just makes the process a little quicker for people who prefer MP4, and in rare cases like myself it means I would be able to transmux the H.264 and AAC to MP4 from MKV rather than having to demux, decode the Vorbis to WAV, feed it through Nero, then mux it to MP4.

Just something you may want to consider, for quality as well as ease of use and conversion.
