I make no claim as to which of you were correct or incorrect. I'm just trying to keep the thread on topic and that is the point the thread transgressed.

If you find it difficult to hit the * key on the beat, you can practise by playing lots of Cowbell Hero.

Yeah I actually let the audio play in an empty timeline and hit the * when I think there should be a cut and 90% of the time it's pretty dead-on.

I found this article amusing (if not nostalgic) since Brad gave me this 'lesson' in Austin like 5 years ago...IN PERSON O_O.

So yeah you can blame him for my lack of timing...

usually after a first run through i will playback with the shuttle tool at ~3/4 speed to check if the markers are synced - i just cant tell at normal speeds sometimes

I agree with the whole sounds right and looks right being different but i think that playing back at a slower speed also helps me a little bit with timing and syncing.

Personally I think this is all a tad insane, but if it works for you guys, then thats cool. Each to their own. I personally only use markers when I'm doing internal sync. In other words, if there is an action I want to line up with a beat or other layer in the music than I mark that action in the clip itself and mark the timeline where the "beat" is in said timeline. Other than that, I play it all by ear and cut to what feels right to me.

And there's certainly nothing wrong with that. Thats what I do most of the time as well. However, there certainly are instances where the visual markers can be very beneficial if I know I'm going to be making cuts/transitions on specific beats/instruments/vocals/noises/etc.
