yeah! that's what i'm talking about. and i believe that they're an art form too, just not an original one. oh well, being original's unoriginal.

besides, this entire topic's just like trying to get us to find out what sex the average person is. there are errors in judgement, nomatter what you do.

I think most editors have little or no say in the footage given to them or the music either. Yes the footage given to them is original, in that no one has seen it yet, but the editor usually isn't part of the shooting process, nor the score either. We are all just editors, but we are making something new out of the vast amount of music and footage anime or not out there. A real editor is giving the footage and the music and told how it should be done, and only allowed to suggest what to do, but have no final say in it.
And yet what they do is considered more original than what we do o_O

I recall this same debate taking place some 20 years ago.
The Issue of the Day was something called "sampling" that music producers had grown fond of quite suddenly, in part because of an expensive device called an "Emulator" marketed by an obscure little company called E-mu Systems.

This argument is pretty much the same thing, framed around the concept of video footage instead of audio footage.

I wonder how much criticism is directed at the directors/edtors of "legitimate" music videos when they use those same stock footage clips of old nuclear tests, lab animals, the Viet Nam war, the flaming monk dude on the cover of that RATM album, etc... that we see over and over again, even though they have a legitimate license to use that footage?

Damn right I enjoy hearing a good word from others about something I've made, whether its an amv, original musical composition, or an impressionist finger painting done with condiments.

If I did it for money, it would be called work.

If I did to learn how to edit, with the intention of someday making money, it would be called studying.

I really don't know what the hell some people think is so wrong with a little approval seeking. I've dealt with LOTS of people in entertainment and the arts, and find it by far the norm.
There's nothing wrong with making something solely for yourself, but to 95% of the people out there who claim that they absolutely don't care what anyone else thinks of their work, I call bullshit.

If that attitude were truly the norm, I doubt this place would exist.

But seriously, this is exactly what I have been saying since I started this. Everyone should be more realistic about their goals, then we wouldn't have problems like this.

Yeah, I had to do this in high school. Our class was split up into groups of five, and we had to edit together a fight scene from Gunsmoke. Unfortunately, myself and my friend in my group were the only ones out of our five that would do any work on this project. The other three didn't really care, and didn't pay attention when our teacher went over using the VTRs. Amazingly enough, our group (my friend and I) was the only group in class to actually finish this project.

Kamoc: Being original is unoriginal? What's the world coming to?! I guess we should all go back to the 12-Bar, 3-Chord song progressions of the 50's. I mean, if being original is unoriginal, then being unoriginal must be original.
You keep talking in circles. I don't know about anyone else, but I can't grasp what you're trying to say because you keep saying different things. Stick with a belief and stay with it.

I believe everything is original, even down to the overplayed Linkinball Z video. That came from someone's imagination. I haven't seen two people make the same exact video yet, so until I do, each video is original. Granted, each one might not me good in my opinion, but I respect that creation.

By the way, when I started making videos, I did it because I wanted to be better than what I had seen. I wanted everyone to know who I was and to love my videos. Now, after actually making some, I've just fallen in love with video editing all over again. I didn't get to work with that much equipment my Junior and Senior years in high school. I want to make videos because I get these ideas which I love, and I want to see them out and share them with others. If other people like them, then that's just another added bonus.

SpPANDA? Am I one of the elitists? I'm confused. I know lots of the award-winningest editors, but they all seem so nice. Curse those evil elitists. They pulled the wool over my eyes.

I feel like I discovered this thread a little late. After MC Wagner tried to reform it from generalized prejudice into something concrete and substantiated, it all just fell apart. Dang, I miss all the fun.
