AMVs: What NOT to do

Post by Pas » Thu Oct 11, 2007 11:08 pm

What's this? A newbie trying to tell me what not to do in my AMV? Surely a jest.

Far from it. I thought it would be cool to have a topic where everyone can pitch in and give some advice/tips on what not to do in your AMVs, or stuff to do only under certain criteria.

Of course, this in no way would be like "well if you do this, your AMV will suck forever and everyone will hate you?" more like "well, if you do this, your AMV will most likely suck forever and everyone will hate you"

:>

Jokes aside however, I should probably say now that this is based on personal preference, and the more people to contribute to it, the better, so we can get a better understanding of what people are after, and what they're not.

If you feel someone has given a uninformed tip or advice that's not entirely true, then feel free to point it out, hopefully we can give some sense of direction for newbie AMV makers (myself included)

And yes, I am aware there's a thread called "So You Want To Be An Anime Music Video Editor?" but this is acting as more of an updated list of tips and advice that newbies can read to get a feel of what we, the members of the .org think and feel about AMVs.

I also did a word search for another topic of the same name and got no results. If there is already a thread like this made, feel free to lock this one.

Ok, so even though I can't really lead the way, since I have yet to upload anything, I still have a few things that I find people should keep away from in their AMVs if they should feel the need to make one.

1. For the love of God, do not filter-whore. It doesn't make your AMV look pretty when you slam so many effects I can't see what the heck is going on in the video. Be artistic, but not seizure-ific.

2. Your video can be deep and meaningful, or light hearted and fun. But please, don't pick both. An AMV just isn't long enough for you to try make the viewer laugh and cry at the same time, we have anime for that.

3. If you want to shorten your song, don't just fade the end of it out, try be a little more considerate, and cut out a verse or chorus, then attach it to where the next line picks up. If you are careful, maybe the viewer won't even notice the change.

4. It's 3:00am in the morning. I open MPC and what's this? MY EYES!!! OH GOD MY EYES!!! Yes, the all-mighty flash beat-syncing. Don't just add flashes to every beat you can hear. Especially if it's white flashes. It's annoying, and just makes me not want to watch the AMV ever again. (of course, the expection is if it actually has some meaning for your AMV)

5. If you're going for trying to tell a story in your AMV, try to link scenes together. It's no good if one second you show them in a gunfight, and the next second they're on holiday. That just makes me think "wait... so uh... what now?"

---

So, that's some stuff I have to share. There's of course plenty of other tips that the more experienced .org members may like to share, or more likely, someone will need to point out that everything I just mentioned is noob-talk.

Either way, as long as it's helpful it's welcome.

For the good of the AMV future!

.. ahhh, come-on now; I like filtering .hack/Roots until everybody looks like "Slam Dunk" or "DBZ" characters -- I live for Video Distortion ^_^ .. sometimes they even look like "W.I.T.C.H." or "Rug Rat's" when I get done and those Distortions started with "Winx Club."

This is very much a matter of opinion. The standards are explained in the guides and the stickies. Therefore this topic is pointless, and you've probably aroused the ire of several regulars. Not a good start. I'd advise you to Lurk Moar.

might i add that these things should be taken as suggestions and not rules... i didn't learn by listening to people telling me to do shit the way they want... i did what i wanted and decided for myself what i should do and how to do it.
