What are you guys using to take screencaps of your computer screen? For some reason the screencap button on my keyboard is no longer working. Freeware is preferable if it exists (not pirated) thanks.

Have you tried pressing "Print Screen", then pasting into an image program?

I usually do that and paste into <a href="http://www.irfanview.com/english.htm">Irfanview</a>. Although, after doing a little exploration, I've found that Irfanview will also do captures.

It depends what I'm taking screen caps of.

If it's just windows applications then I use printscreen ot ctrl + alt + printscreen for just one window.

For directshow captures it's another matter

Print screen does jack for me, it doesn't give me anything I can paste over nor does it even print the screen.

it doesn't get the pic at all just a pretty pic of windows media player

When you hit Printscrn it copys the screen to your clipboard. You must then paste it into a paint/image viewing application, THEN save it.

If you try doing this to a video playing in media player, the hardware overlay prevents it from working and you'll just get a blank media player. You can get this to work by turning off hardware acceleration in the media player Options. Better yet would be to take the video into Virtual Dub, then Video|Copy source frame to clipboard... Then paste it to your favorite image editor.

There's a Shareware called SnagIt that does exactly that. You can capture single frames or even movies with it. I don't have the url handy now, but if you google for it, 'tis sure on of the top.

But SnagIt doesn't prevent the hardware overlay problem. I either use SnagIt while in RealPlayer, or use PrintScreen while in RealPlayer / Windows Media Player (Need to turn hardware accelleration off for Medai Player, though) and then paste that screen into Photoshop.
