Best Codec For Compression?

Post by Pas » Tue Oct 02, 2007 5:34 am

This is different from my other issue, so forgive the new thread >"<

Just wondering what codec would be best for me to compress my AMV as. I don't really understand, but I really want to use H264 in a MP4 container, if that made any logical sense...

Image

Here's the options I'm given, but there's a H264 encoder that came with AMVapps (or CCCP, not sure which...)

Anyway, I've already tried Indeo Video 5.10, which not only looked like shit, but had a rather large file size (93.1mb for a 2.18 sec video, 640x360 res)

I also tried Huffyuv, but that resulted in shitty quality with a HUGE filesize (997mb)

When I tried XviD MPEG-4 Codec, the computer just stalled, doing nothing.

Help please? Doesn't have to be H264, as long as it's a good compression for it.

It should have resulted in no video quality loss at all. Did you follow the settings here?

No I did not >.> (damn, now I look like an ass)

I shall go do that right away. Be back when it's rendered with the results.

(btw, Huffyuv is still a huge file, would I take the AMV and encode as H264 or something after that? What happens from there?)

No change. Followed the guide, but there's defiantly something wrong, this is even worse than Indeo Video 5.10

example shots:

The first image is of when I imported a PSD file into premiere and gave it motion (when the image was still, it looked fine)

The second is clearly taken from the Lucky Star OP, and god knows what the hell is going on there.

huffyuv is good for a "master copy" due to file size...

I'd go with either XVID or h.264

Me thinks it's too late for that... unless I can deinterlace footage I've already used.

Plus, I still don't know how to export properly. As shown in my first screenshot, I only have those options, and 3 of them already don't work properly.

Your confused I think.....
:?
You DO NOT WANT TO EXPORT COMPRESSED VIDEO from your NLE....sorry about that but lets just get that out there. Looks like you have a snap shot of premiere export, which is notoriously bad for compression and exporting of any kind. Just because premiere can compress your files for you, doesn't mean its any good at it....in fact the opposite!!!:)

Ok now for what you could do, I personally if exporting out of premiere set up a frame server to something that can encode your video well, when I was encoding to xvid I would set it up to virtualdubmod. But you don't have the option of h.264 in an mp4 container, at least I haven't found it (oh and don't encode h.264 in an .avi format cos its all kinda bad for lots of reasons). What I tend to do mostly now, (now I have a bigger hard drive as well) is always create a lossless or uncompressed copy to my hard drive, usually using lagarith but if your preference is huffy use that. Then use something like mp4box or Super or Zarx264gui. I always get some kind of crap if I export the uncompressed or lossless from Premerie though, so what you should do is

1) Set up a frame server to vidrtualdubmod, Debugmode is pretty good imo and then export (from virtualdubmod) in either lossless or uncompressed, lagarith in my case.

2) Then when ever you feel like it you have the uncompressed or lossless video in great quality (or at least you have preserved the quality) and then use any of the programs mentioned, to compress it to h.264 in an mp4 container (or any compression you want really, VP6 for video streaming on the web for example).

Two questions:

1) What the hell is a frameserver?

2) Why the hell am I such a noob?

In all seriousness though, I actually don't know what a frameserver is, nor do I know how to do what you have just detailed there, even though I'm sure you were trying to tell me how to do it.

My assumption:

- export as Lagarith loessless codec
- take video, put in Vdub, compess with whatever
- put into a container?
- ???
- wtf did I just say?

actually if you're using premiere you should export as a uncompressed avi O.o from what i know (Vegas does well with lagarith, but from what I'm told premiere handles compressions horridly)

then if you want to compress, then compress using Zarxgui or Virtualdub Mod
