on one hand, you have creators who make and post their amvs purely for the joy of making and sharing their work. while the other hand is about creators who treat amv making as a serious craft and post their amvs for feedback on how to improve.

every creator on the org is aware that their videos are free game, and are therefore subject to (not judgement, but) criticism.

but there are many people who don't appreciate the harsh criticism that extreme editors (and critiquers) can dish out. and if the opinions are not wanted by the creator, then why should they be given?

and yet, it is improbable to know in advance whether opinions are desired.

it's a conundrum.
Perhaps there should be an option to opt out of the star system and/or opinions altogether?

And quite honestly, new creators (who are often the ones most in need of encouragement and critique, NOT criticism) may not know their videos are "fair game". To use myself as an example, I've only been making amv's for a year. I'm 35 years old, I've been to art school, I've hung out in interwebs forums for over 10 years now---I'm no stranger to criticism and stinging posts. However, I have to admit I was shocked at the reception some of my videos had gotten (and still do), because my understanding was that this was a place for creators to come and share. Nowhere does it say that this site is a group of likeminded individuals who are interested in sharing and watching the fruits of each other's imaginationsUNLESS YOUR ASPECT RATIO IS WRONG ARGH THE WORST AMV EVER WHAMWHAMWHAM!

For something people keep saying is a hobby they enjoy, some of them take it (and themselves) a tad too seriously.

I dunno. You're right, it is a conundrum. Is there a happy medium? Maybe not.

What.
making amvs has CEASED to be fun.
It has? When?

What's your whole reasoning behind this? Have alot of people you know suddenly found making AMVs to be un-fun? For me, and the impression that I've gotten from many of those I've talked to is that they enjoy making them (or, if they don't enjoy the actual editing process, they enjoy seeing the final product that they have created, making the editing worth it). If they didn't, I imagine that they wouldn't make them.

A few examples of how people still find amvs fun:

As has already been mentioned, all of the AWWW videos. It's a pretty stupid idea, but it was a great time making a video for it, and the sheer ridiculousness of people who weren't originally involved jumping onboard and making more of them is just awesome.

AtomX's Iron Chef Tourney. Not only fun, but brings the community together in friendly competition. I know I'm definitely looking forward to participating, as are others.

There's plenty of other examples as well, if you just look for them.

Also, work and fun are not necessarily seperate like that. AMVs can be alot of work, but you know work can be alot of fun sometimes, and the end product can bring enough satisfaction that that work was all worth it.

So I have to ask again: why did you make this topic? Is it perchance because you no longer find making AMVs an enjoyable experience, but you're in denial about it and are desperately grasping to be able to continue experiencing enjoyment through editing even though you no longer can (or perhaps never have)?

Also, your definition of certain words (as has already been stated) is wrong. Masochism has already been explained, but stating that Silver_Moon, Ermac, and others are martyrs? They didn't "die" for a cause. They simply quit (and yes, one can quit a hobby; one can quit almost anything, but regardless, that doesn't mean that they won't come back. I suppose we could instead say that they're taking an extended sabbatical, retirement, or something equally ridiculous).

Additionally, if you're being treated like crap in a studio, just leave it. A chunk of studios are made for fun. If you're in one that isn't, you're obviously in the wrong kind of studio.

very deep... and very true I'd forgotted that I am NOT your typical AMV editor... maybe that's why so few are like me ^_^. I've always said that I am NOT here for the anime, but the amvs themselves. It is the things we can do on computers that intrigues me, not anime in the least... well maybe in the least but...

so yeah! Thankyou VERY much for reminding me ;p
I'll say this clearly and in all caps because not a lot of people seem to understand it; THE WORD OTAKU HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LIKING ANIME - IT IS A PERSONALITY TYPE. I can offer you some scholarly articles to that point written over the past decade or 2 if you want. It's very close to an obsessive personality disorder if you look at it clinically.

If you don't like being judged on your shortcomings then stop posting videos i guess. Some hobbies are more labor-intensive than others while some are insanely expensive. Rock collecting is pretty decent though - you should give it a try.
it's not about the criticism per say, it's HOW you say it.
That means you have a problem not with the community or the hobby but with the Internet - that's a clear distinction.

Well, there is - it's called not uploading them to local.

Speak for yourself.

... Please tell me that was a joke.

(On top of that, you misspelled "masochism".)
Knowname wrote:Secondly there is this studio issue. competition for PRIDE is one thing, but like dedication, there IS a point when your not only competing for pride but your also pawning it off on the subservient. Again, lets go back and define some of those points. What I mean by pawning it off is your EXPECTING this level of 'professionalism' out of others in your studio.
Name one AMV production group that does this.
CorpseGoddess wrote:Perhaps there should be an option to opt out of the star system and/or opinions altogether?
You could just ignore your scores...
CorpseGoddess wrote:I guess my question comes in---who decided that amv's had to be a "judged" hobby at ALL? I believe there should be a balance between enjoyment for enjoyment's sake and serious critique to further talent. But not everybody makes amv's to be scrutinized and not everybody makes them for fun.
Then the people who don't want their AMVs to be scrutinized can avoid the AMV Announcements board. Anyone who lurks a decent amount will come to realize pretty quickly that any video posted in their is fair game for constructive criticism.
CorpseGoddess wrote:When did a-m-v.org go from being the place where Phade was trying to catalog and collect all the amv's to the online equivalent of art school (which I attended, so I recognise the attitude)?
Vocal minority. You will appreciate the fact that the vast majority of members here aren't like that.

See above comment about lurking more.

That only gets you out of the star score system; if you don't upload a video to local, anyone can leave opinions on it.

(Which is why I did exactly that for my one video released so far this year...)

bro, your not getting the point that *I* don't change, I've been largely the same since my first video, I get slightly better, but I don't change. It's the ppl around me that change, the hobby has gotten alot more popular, ppl have come and gone. Maybe this makes me more sensitive when...

when 4 or 5 (or more) of my favorite amv editors retire all for the same reason I take notice is all I'm saying. I'm NOT saying it has ceased to be fun, I AM saying it has ceased to be FOR fun. I'm sorry for not quite transcribing that right... I'm no literary scholar, far from it.

And for the record I'm not being treated like crap!... I'm not even getting into that -_-. I wuv my studios! I'm just offering advise, some ppl don't like to be bothered with this narcisistic crap, as you said there may be two types of studios (and there are...), watch out for that ^_^

*and as a side note... critique... that's a new word for me *.*

A handful of editors quit. So what? That doesn't mean anything, aside from that they quit making videos. It's hardly indicitive of the community as a whole. It's more just an example that sometimes people get tired of doing things after a long time and want to do something else.

What are you talking about? I used to get random opinions all the time (and still do occasionally).
