*snort* I would have to say yes, yes it is.BurningLeaves wrote:So... it's like posting your vid in the announcement forum?CorpseGoddess wrote: 2. gratification gained from pain, deprivation, degradation, etc., inflicted or imposed on oneself, either as a result of one's own actions or the actions of others, esp. the tendency to seek this form of gratification.

My 2 cents:
Is it as fun as it was when I started? No. because I know now that I have to work harder if I want to make something that is considered 'good'. But Im the one making the choice to try and improve. I think the satisfaction of knowing youve got a great video under your belt over weighs the decrease of 'fun' in the hobby. Iv herd this site being referred to often as 'A place to categorize every amv made' And that's great. But if that's all it was then we would just log on, post our video and sign out. Never look at star ratings or ops, Never go into the forums. But we stick around, because I believe most people crave the input from other editors. Plus the 'better' the video is, the more fun the public will have watching it.

Fair enough. And I think that's each individual's choice to make, as to whether or not they choose to improve, grow and learn. But I don't think it's other people's choice to *impose* that choice on others. Here's an example of what I mean---BurningLeaves wrote:My 2 cents:

There are a lot of videos on here that are far from technically perfect. Or even technically good. But you know what? I love watching certain ones, because I enjoy them. I'm not caring about the aspect ratio or minor details---I'm just having a great old time being entertained. And that's perfectly okay with me---that video will probably go on my favourites. There are other videos that are perfectly done, all technical details considered, special effects up the wazoo---and they're soulless, dull and boring. Not on my favourites list.
Sometimes I just love what somebody's done with a video/song combo. Sometimes it's a particular effect. Sometimes I just like something, dammit, and can't tell you exactly why.
My rambling point is that everybody has a different definition of what a "better" video is, and oftentimes on this site it seems that pure, visceral, undefinable enjoyment of amv's is held in lower regard than the technical, logical, linear aspects. And I was just wondering when that became the case. Was the star rating originally intended to segregate or to just indicate, "hey, that was good! I liked it!" or "bleah, not my thing".
Again, just my two bits and my personal observations.

very deep... and very true I'd forgotted that I am NOT your typical AMV editor... maybe that's why so few are like me ^_^. I've always said that I am NOT here for the anime, but the amvs themselves. It is the things we can do on computers that intrigues me, not anime in the least... well maybe in the least but...BasharOfTheAges wrote:You are obviously not of the otaku (traditional Japanese meaning not americanized one) mindset - if you were you'd not separate work and fun... they are indistinguishable parts of the whole.
so yeah! Thankyou VERY much for reminding me ;p
lmao! so yeah, so now I can go back into the fireing squad with my next video and not get so emoBurningLeaves wrote:So... it's like posting your vid in the announcement forum?CorpseGoddess wrote: 2. gratification gained from pain, deprivation, degradation, etc., inflicted or imposed on oneself, either as a result of one's own actions or the actions of others, esp. the tendency to seek this form of gratification.
it's not about the criticism per say, it's HOW you say it.BasharOfTheAges wrote:Also, to address the overall point - If you want to half-ass something and still get pats on the back kindly try boochsack. If you don't like being judged on your shortcomings then stop posting videos i guess. Some hobbies are more labor-intensive than others while some are insanely expensive. Rock collecting is pretty decent though - you should give it a try.
see, like this criticism is pure lol ;p (wich vid btw, this weeks or last weeks?? I'm working on another one atm, I REALLY wanna make it confusing)JaddziaDax wrote:yer video still confuses me even if the editing was done alright O.o
Sorry but, to me, going from hobby to hobby is for losers (not that I'll never/ have never have another hobby than amvs, heck I was a big sports/ video games afficionado LONG before amvs and I certainly haven't quit those). I've stuck with AMVs for 7 years and I'm probly an amver for life. I don't change, the ppl around me change, I'm just here to keep it cool... for my own sanity.... cuz I'm just stubborn like that.Kariudo wrote:I feel pretty safe in saying that everyone had fun/felt satisfaction when they first started making videos...but as with most things the law of diminishing returns comes into play.
This drives people to look for something else that's "fun" or "satisfying"
lmao! Welcome to my world... and thankyou for translating, Mandy. I just have 'weird' ways around things. (also I was skipping a few steps) Thanks for the spelling catch, I'll keep that in mind.CorpseGoddess wrote:Weird way to spell the word and a REALLY weird way to define it.
that's my point!! ... oh wait your responding to bashar aren't you... well, I think you said it in a clearer way though! ;p I just don't speak the typical language of this town... (where's that town of a-m-v.org script when you need it??)CorpseGoddess wrote:I guess my question comes in---who decided that amv's had to be a "judged" hobby at ALL? I believe there should be a balance between enjoyment for enjoyment's sake and serious critique to further talent. But not everybody makes amv's to be scrutinized and not everybody makes them for fun. When did a-m-v.org go from being the place where Phade was trying to catalog and collect all the amv's to the online equivalent of art school (which I attended, so I recognise the attitude)?
Next week (or the week after...) when I post my next vid I'll start a new topic about 'does anybody really like qc's???' I've already got it planned out. I've never been a proponent for qc's.BurningLeaves wrote:My 2 cents:

I completely agree with you here, however I think its a matter of peoples manners and social skills (or choices) rather then the critique itself. There's a way to tell people your opinion without insulting them. For instance the all so often 'Fail' I see. If your not going to go into detail about why you believe that video 'fails' then that's just a pointless critique with no other purpose then to insult the person who created the video. Im sure for some people its a conscious choice they make to hand out random insults. But to say the same thing, that the video fails, in a way that say CrackTheSky does it, (there's ALOT of people I notice hes just the one that comes to mind) Where he would take the time to say. This is what I would have liked more and why. Then that's valuable input you can learn from. Constructive criticism and flaming are two different things. But I think that topics been beaten to death already

i can understand both sides here.
on one hand, you have creators who make and post their amvs purely for the joy of making and sharing their work. while the other hand is about creators who treat amv making as a serious craft and post their amvs for feedback on how to improve.
every creator on the org is aware that their videos are free game, and are therefore subject to (not judgement, but) criticism.
but there are many people who don't appreciate the harsh criticism that extreme editors (and critiquers) can dish out. and if the opinions are not wanted by the creator, then why should they be given?
and yet, it is improbable to know in advance whether opinions are desired.
it's a conundrum.
