How about something like "notes from a noob"? I've been editing almost a year now and have been spending more and more time on the site, but I find that my views on things tend to be very different from a lot of the established editors, for one reason or another.

Of course, being a 35-year-old female, my views tend to be different from a lot of the *new* editors as well (the male teen crowd). :P

Anyway, it might be interesting to hear from people newer to the scene...

As long as the advice came coupled with credentials - as in "this is what i'm saying" and "this is why you should take me seriously."

Oh no, fair enough. Although I've noticed a distinct lack of "this is my opinion" on a lot of the boards---things can sometimes be presented as dogma.

The whole idea is to have it an opinion piece, a newcomer's perspective.

x2

Requiring credentials as an editor is ridiculous when the majority of the members of this site are fans who've never edited a video themselves. AMV org isn't just for editors, it's for fans and viewers and anyone interested in anime music videos. If it's a community newsletter, we should hear from the people who make up that community, not just the editors.

And even if it is an editor-only newsletter, we still have more "unproven" editors than we do "proven" ones. Why exclude them? If you don't want to hear their opinion, just don't read that section of the newsletter.

How new is new? Like, new to editing or new to the ORG? I've been around here for years, dabbling in editing, but I only managed to upload an AMV this past month.

And also, if you start out writing an opinion piece as a newcomer, how long do you get to do it? After awhile you aren't a newcomer anymore so again, the qualifications are up for debate.

With regards to a section on editing tips, maybe it would be a good idea to solicit tips from a variety of people, basically anyone who felt they had something worthy of sharing, with the final "published" tips to be determined by the newsletter editor(s). Provide a word limit so the tips don't turn into giant tutorials. You could have a "Submit a tip" link right in the newsletter.

I don't know if I'm thinking of a time limit in terms of "new". Just using myself as an example, I've been editing for just a year now (October 2006), more seriously in the last 5 or so months than before. I signed up on the org in January 2006 so I could download amv's, but hadn't really gotten involved in the community here on the forums until a couple of months ago. So even though I've been on the org for over a year and a half, I still feel REALLY new to the whole scene. That's sort of what I'm talking about.

And it might be interesting to follow the "new" person's perspective for a while, to see how it develops and evolves.

I dunno. I was just tossing off an idea---maybe it's usable, maybe it can morph into something else.

I don't think anyone remotely sane could write a sensible explanation of it. It's like trying to explain /b/ to normal people :uhoh:

Well, that's easy, just don't delude yourself into thinking they don't have a reason for moral indignation afterwards.
