Melodic motion (which isn't covered by strict beat-counting) and/or lyrical progression (which isn't covered by strict phrase-matching), to throw out a couple. Different methods to map those to visual motion.Eva-Fan wrote:how is that limiting? Seems so limiting.
Of course, if your definitions of "sync" encompass everything that might be in some way related to their generalizations, then there's no point in mentioning additional drivers.

okay "confession time" eh sort of...
my most recent video was something of a test of this theory (it was one of the many reasons i made it)... I usually don't make pure eye candy videos, I tried in the past and failed (put too much lyric/mood sync? - not enough effects?) anyways... I wanted to test to see if effects with no story would get more of a reaction than my last couple simple videos, and so far it has already gotten more local downloads and quicker responses than the last one.
personally for me though all the amv has to do is entertain me or keep me interested in some way and I'll like it... it doesn't have to fall into either category, i don't really like one of those categories over the other.

I personally like the 'old school' way where effects are used 'naturally! The effects are part of the AMV, the perfect example is Tainted Dohnuts, haven't seen it for a while but can't think of anything better, the idea can only be pulled of through keying and rotoing (if they are considered effects anymore) and it's done in a way that is not showy. You don't watch it and think 'wow look at those effects' you think how cool it would be for Spike and Vash to be in the same room! That what real effect are for and how people used to use them on the .ORG. Now people use then as the feature.
Spatchcock..........A dressed and split chicken for roasting or grilling on a spit.

lmao! this tears you up doesn't it Josh?? I *think* I sync to the pauses in the song moreso than the beats... I think that's it in my case anyway...Eva-Fan wrote:how is that limiting? Even if it isn't,I'd still like to say...Autraya wrote:This isn't really an effects vs no effects comparison, I wonder what others think on this.
I'm a real no-effects whore, and I do hate flashy and effects filled vids (despite my bleach vid,I hate it even though I made it). Don't know what exactly you're calling 'old school' editing (if you mean those two vids you posted - I haven't seen 'em,so I don't know what kind of editing is done on them),but I prefer watching some serious amv, that concentrates more on a story, than flashing and eyesburning effects. Sepia - effect which I wouldn't even call an effect. Euphoria - I don't know what kind of effects it contains, because I really haven't seen that video,BUT - I've seen 'Ophoria' (it's in AMV Hell 3),and if original Euphoria is something like that - then I won't even check out the original. Don't get me wrong - I don't feel any hate towards effects filled vids, but there's no even real need for them,as I think most important thing is Storyline and Mood. Example : "Whoa! When Naruto flies toward enemy all of the background is like super flashy and Naruto himself doesn't change!(masking)" - now is there a real need for effects? Not! My opinion here - I prefer vids with less effects (if any at all),and if that's what you call 'old school',then I prefer old school editing.
I think I've said enough..

I think the general problem with a lot of people here is that you all equate having lots of effects and beat matching with not following the storyline at all.Beast Spear wrote:I've never really liked effects much. Sometimes it's nice to have a little something, but "Eye candy videos" I find to be quite boring. I'd prefer some substance in the theme or idea of the AMV than just lots of effects, and the seizure inducing effects are...very annoying. When I have to close my eyes or turn away when watching something, that's pretty bad...
And if it's what most people prefer now...let them, you can't change their mind. But as proof by this topic, there are people who don't, so at least they can enjoy an old school video if it is released.
you CAN follow the lyrics, match the melody, match the beat, match the lyrical progression, and have it all in one package, you know.
Also, effects don't have to be "flashy". Again, take whisper of the beast (the AMV). Almost nothing in that was "strobing" besides the lightning flashes, but the entire video was rife with effects, constantly, but they were done so smoothly and subtly that you didn't notice.

See, like this here. Euphoria was so popular not only because of it's effects but because it followed the melody and mood of the song EXTREMELY well, using effects to compliment and further amplify the mood of the song, as well as following the lyrics *extremely* well.Rapture** wrote:Don't get me wrong - I don't feel any hate towards effects filled vids, but there's no even real need for them,as I think most important thing is Storyline and Mood.
Without those effects, if the entire video had just been scene changes to the lyrics, it would have been boring and sucked pretty bad.
