Does anyone here (amv makers) do work for MTV?

Post by Sukunai » Fri Aug 24, 2007 1:19 pm

If not, why not, I'd like to see the genius shown in our top 10% able to make it possible for me to watch MTV and not gag quite so much.

I'm assuming most of the talent that produces amvs is generally speaking "amateur" ie non professional persons doing it for the fun of it.

Is there anyone among our talented creators that is professional?

Anyway, in closing my post, I want to say a genuine thank you for the last few years that I have been able to enjoy the amvs that exist out there. You've often shown me music I have never heard, and shown me how something can be so much more when it is combined with skill talent and imagination.

I am currently a major fan of Reflections, a song so incredible, and video footage so completely suited. And fat chance of seeing anything that good as a rule on MTV (which has mainly sucked since the mid 80s).

I like the implication that MTV has music videos.

MTV will never be as good as the best AMVs because MTV is a professional environment with a schedule. People spend months and years making AMV masterpieces. MTV costs money and time of professional folk. Its a completely different environment.

working for MTV does not = making REAL music videos...

(if i were to make a guess i doubt most of the real music video directors dont work for mtv specifically, but for a production company that makes commercials shorts and music videos... or a music studio)

it means making reality shows that no one really likes or wants to watch... or really cool graphics that run across the screen while youre watching said show because nothing else is on.

Production companies generally make them. The stuff MTV DOES do is a lot of the bumpers/neat graphics in the corner of the screen, etc. but I'd be willing to bet that THOSE are actually done by either other production houses under contract or by the parent company of MTV.

For example, I know that Scripps Networks is responsible for a bunch of shows on a bunch of channels, but they do about half outhouse and about half inhouse for their shows. They run stuff like HGTV and DIY channel.

It all comes down to who will do it cheaper :)

MTV used to be badass when they showed music videos all the time. Now they are gay to the max.

Yes.

Guess I made the error of suggesting MTV "made" the videos.

Clearly MTV is just a program channel or something to that effect.

But I can recall, when turning on MTV, or in the case of Canada, something like Much Music, and there were actual music videos playing, and occasionally even reasonable ones.

I suppose it's the artists that make the videos, or at least they have someone make the videos for them somehow.

My main concern is, how can we, who are basically amateurs using home PCs limited or nearly non existent resources, in spare time, generate such incredibly inspired music videos with video content that requires massive editing, and songs, often never envisioned for the video?

I have many dvds from several major music groups like Rush, Abba, Queen, etc, and usually, the best stuff is just video of concerts. The videos you see on places like MTV, its all shit.

I recall seeing several amvs using Enya's song Gravity of Love, and some of them are superior. And then you see the ACTUAL video Enya had on tv, and you think, gee I hope she didn't pay to much for that crap.
