sometimes in an anime the original story will be rather easy to go with and it's hards to resist.

But How I edit is, I hear the song like 30 times or whatever, and I find one part I wanna edit, so I edit that then there will be another part so i'll edit with that.

So afetr a while it looks like

20 seconds of video then just music for 10 seconds then 15 seconds of video then 5 seconds of music, etc..

But I actually kinda like progressive AMVs... But, they aren't very creative so it's kinda hard to.. Not fall in and end up doing one.

One thing you can try is editing to series / movie you haven't seen before, so you aren't so hung up on keeping in line with the plot. I've done it several times with fair results.

Good point, though that should also go along with a caution note that it can make scene logical choices a bit complicated... (at least it has in my observation)
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Two words: Live action.

Try editing a live action video or two, because you'll find that you're forced out of those habits. For instance, more often than not you won't be able to use one particular scene to take up a segment of the song, because once you go through and filter out the clips with lip flap, etc etc, you'll find that you won't have enough footage from just that scene. Forces you to think outwards towards other similar or significant scenes, particularly if you're going for a drama live action vid.

If im doing a vid that has a story the first thing i work is out the rough story, then i make sure it is at least a little different than the story in the anime i'm using. Then I just skip around looking for the parts that fit the spot in the story. ANother useful trick to re-cast the characters, Change the relationships between them etc. When you are editing you can totally change the context of scene
