No H.264 in AVI sticky

Post by NeoQuixotic » Tue Jul 17, 2007 8:09 pm

I think we need a sticky in the Compression, Encoding, and Converting section stating that H.264 in an AVI container is a very bad idea. It should state why it is a bad idea and link to the proper ways of encoding to H.264; be it MP4 or MKV. We keep getting a lot of H.264 to AVI threads that have really no point to them.

Anyone else think this is a good idea?

Sure. Write it, and we'll see what happens from there.

Let people encode their vids the way they want.

Apparently if it works fine, let it be.

I would say this isn't something for a sticky though. Probably more for the guides. Sure, the sticky will spare us a few badly-encoded videos, but there's a hundred other things - all in the guides - that do that too. In fact compared to some encoding screwups we get, this one's pretty mild!

no one would buy a movie if it were a shitty vcd encode or buy a cd if it sounded like it was held up to a tv to record. trying to give your video some aesthetics should be one of the goals of making a video. notice how no one encodes to real media anymore. and if your not willing to put 30 minutes into learning encoding you should not be here in the first place.

Quality isn't everything in vids. If you have to have BEYOND PERFECT quality for every video you watch, then you apparently care more about the encode than the actual video.
I think people like that shouldn't be here if anyone.

Im not saying its everything but it is still important. we are in a community of people who make amvs and using properly encoded source and properly encoded final product are a goal.

If you put make your quality look as best as you can, that's what should matter.

Period.
