No, there was never a true HD source for Haruhi available. Upscaled raws were floating around fooling people thinking they were HD, including me and Koop. I only noticed when my video was already finished and told him so whlie his was already in full progress :/.Scintilla wrote:Wait... you mean he made a video in HD, with a series that had an HD source available, and he didn't use the HD source?

Actually, I knew they weren't HD from the quality and other people talking about it, but I had already been rotoscoping and adding effects in HD. It looked kickass to me, so I didn't really care.JCD wrote:No, there was never a true HD source for Haruhi available. PS - Part of the reason I kept editing in HD was also cause of this HDTV that I currently use as a monitor.

I try to clean and check how things look on my 1680x1050 monitor so that stuff looks decent... never thought to actually upscale the footage and export at a higher size, though my last vid looks half-way decent fullscreened for me.
I've been thinking about larger resolutions for the next vid i'm doing since i don't plan to actually use the full screen of an episode anywhere anyway. Finished filesize may be an issue, but that's what multiple version liks are for, right?

two more 848x480: Troyan's Crossfire and FC's Ileia is a Jerk and Smells of Canadian Bacon vid. [why?... I don't know...]
some 768x432: JCD's Haruhi, Verses' Symphony of Insanity, and my own Awakened

100% agreed. I upscaled my last vid from 640x360 to 960x540. It took ~20hrs for the < 3min video. But I didn't want to upload anything too big to the org. So I settled for 768x432. [Also it's 60 fps, so filesize=even bigger]. Anyways, unless I had hosting, or another distribution method, that version is only going to cons.WC Annihilus wrote:For the second question (forgot bout it, heh) I'd say that is one reason. Another would be file size, creators not wanting their viewers to have to download a large file. Another thing to consider is the amount of time it takes to render. Not everyone has powerful rig that can bust these out quickly. For some, it takes to days to render and encode normal 640x480 videos. Would take close to double (ok, I don't know this, I'm just guessing) for a 1280x720 (or whatever) version. Probably few other reasons, or of course I could be totally wrong

My last 2 videos (The World Moved On and Time Waits For No One. Their MP4 versions anyway) end up playing back at 852x480 (they're 720x480 with a 16:9 AR flag) :O
I also have a TRUE 720p video planned out :3

Upscaling is a waste of space and is uncool kids.
That said, FFDShow has a nice feature, it has various filters that can be applied during playback, you can even call AVISynth scripts in it; so if you really don't like 640x480 or whatever, give it a go; though I doubt it will make the world of difference, you simply cannot put back what wasn't there to begin with.
Personally I'd rather people used native resolutions and left it to the end user to filter on playback or whatever, not bloat the filesize with a crappy upscale and filter.
But w/e. I notice there are some fansub groups that sub at 1024x768 which makes me want to pull my hair out a) it's an uncommon resolution for video and b) it bloats the filesize needlessly.
