Anime as Culture Assimilation - please help with interviews.
Greetings!
I'm making my graduation thesis about culture assimilation, specially the otaku culture. I need to interview some people to get a glimpse of the situation, and I'm asking for volunteers.
You do not need to identificate yourself, and you don't need to answer every question. If you prefer, you can send me your email or messenger ID and I'll send the questions to you, instead of answering here at the forum.
As thanks, I'll get some of the best interviews, complete them with .Org related questions and send it to the admins as possible updates to the "Interviews" page, if the volunteer agrees.
Here are the questions:
How old are you?
What is your yearly income?
How old you were when you first saw anime? Which were your first impressions?
How it evolved? What do you see today?
Any favorites? Anime, directors, studios, manga... and why are they your favorites?
When and how did you find the .org?
Do you edit?
If you do, what do you use for editing (hardware/software) and how do you obtain your footage?
Which non-anime shows or movies do you like? Why do you think they’re good?
How do you see american animation compared to japanese animation?
Thanks for your time and your help.

How old are you?
16
What is your yearly income?
About $840
How old you were when you first saw anime? Which were your first impressions?
around 2-6 (I know I loved anime early on, but can't remember the specific shows, just know I watched a good amount of it). I loved it. But why I did depended on the show. Samurai Pizza Cats was just awesome I can't really remember why I loved it so much though, I loved Cyber 6 for the plot, and liked Sailor Moon for no real reason other than it was good.
How it evolved? What do you see today?
It has gotten more popular/well known in the US, but I didn't pay enough attention to anime when I was younger ( I mearly liked it alot), to really be able to judge if it has improved/changed alot other than animation.
Any favorites? Anime, directors, studios, manga... and why are they your favorites?
GAINAX is my favorite studio for being able to make great, deep shows which appear to be random like Abenobashi and Fooly Cooly. Ken Akamatsu is my favorite manga writer/artist because all of his work is great, not many other people really compare to it.
When and how did you find the .org?
About three years ago
Do you edit?
Not yet
If you do, what do you use for editing (hardware/software) and how do you obtain your footage?
N/A
Which non-anime shows or movies do you like? Why do you think they’re good?
Avatar is good because it actually has a decent story.
I like other non-anime shows/movies, but Avatar stand out the most.
How do you see american animation compared to japanese animation?
It depends on the show. While Avatar and Megas XLR are excellent, I don't like some other shows.

How old are you?
21
What is your yearly income?
$0 presently
Generally no more than $2000 a year of salary plus $6-7000 of student loans.
How old you were when you first saw anime?
Depends on what one would consider my first anime. Probably Speed Racer at age 6-7.
I didn't start watching anime as something distinct from other TV viewing until about 14, when I got into the fairly mainstream shows such as Pokemon and later Sailor Moon on TV.
How it evolved? What do you see today?
My interest in anime has been subdued to a large extent. I've passed through a fanboy stage, the end of which was probably accellerated by closer encounters with fan communities. I'm now a casual viewer of anime, with my interests lying largely elsewhere.
What do I see today? I continue to see what I came to anime for in the first place - interesting ideas, fine graphical solutions, fine entertainment combined with food for thought - but that isn't to say I'm naive enough to assume that ALL and any anime, or even the majority, will provide that in quality and quantity.
Any favorites? Anime, directors, studios, manga... and why are they your favorites?
Gainax products of the late 90's and early 2000's are notable highlights. Naoki Urasawa's work, particularly Monster, have been of (re)defining influence on my attitude to anime in the last year.
When and how did you find the .org?
One compound wor: LinkinBallZ (to be clear, I was pissed about it and came to flame people about it, discovering how grossly wrong I was in my assumptions about the AMV community).
Do you edit?
Yes, but not at the moment.
If you do, what do you use for editing (hardware/software) and how do you obtain your footage?
A home computer with Adobe Premier and an outfit of openly-available utilities.
Which non-anime shows or movies do you like? Why do you think they’re good?
[points to sig] That should explain one point.
Otherwise, I think listing what and why is pretty pointless because there's no generalization for all the many great films I've seen in my life. For instance, the ingenious absurdity combined with deep social commentary makes me a big fan of a late Soviet 'cult' comedy film called Kin-Dza-Dza which you probably never heard of.
How do you see american animation compared to japanese animation?
I dislike American animation as a general rule, but I'm not willing to make any rational comparisons. I will say that in my personal view, there are a lot of anime titles I like, but only a handful of American ones - most of which are the adult-oriented comedies.[/quote]

About 12? I think that's when I started watching Speed Racer. Cool stuff, though I didn't really know it was anime at the time. Started knowing about anime when I was about 15-16, started watching Tenchi.
How it evolved?
Friends "made" me watch Tenchi, then I started watching stuff on Cartoon Network, then I realized there was a much larger world of it out there
What do you see today?
Meh, whatever looks interesting.

If you do, what do you use for editing (hardware/software) and how do you obtain your footage?
Premiere Pro and my laptop, along with VDub(Mod), and Photoshop as well. All footage is ripped from DVDs.
Which non-anime shows or movies do you like? Why do you think they’re good?
Star Wars, Animaniacs, most of Comedy Central. It either needs to have a cool story line or just be funny.
How do you see american animation compared to japanese animation?
Don't watch much of it, the "older" things like Animaniacs and what used to be on Nick was good. The original Rugrats, Doug, etc.

Which non-anime shows or movies do you like? Why do you think they’re good?
Shows: Old Nick cartoons like: Rocko's Modern life, Ren and Stipy, and Ed, Edd, & Eddy.
Movies: Never Ending Story, Nicolas Nicolebee, Fifth Element, Event Orison, and Count of Monty Crisco
Reasons for the shows: Funniest cartoons nick has ever come out with. Invader Zim is pretty cool too, but those two are my top favorites.
Reasons for Movies: Story lines.
How do you see American animation compared to Japanese animation?
American animation:Random pointless episodes with no story line, and over used hummer. I like the old stuff, there is very little new shows I like except Ed Edd and Eddy.
Japanese Animation:Not aimed at children, Indepth storylines, not over done, consistent episodes, great character development, they actually end, I like the facial expressions, fantastical, mysterious, main characters die, they are actually human, I can relate to the main character some of the times, they are funny random, some of the same old jokes are still funny (like the romantic comedies), good animation, good voice acting, eye candy, romantic relationships that actually go beyond that of just being implied (American: Boy and girl look at each other and hold hands)(Japanese: They kiss, or even fuck. [examples: Berserk, and His and Her circumstances]), as you watch them more they mean more to you you understand the story more, rewatchable, only two animes I hated with a passion out of like the fifty I have seen so far, people make good amvs, good extras on the dvds, a great escape from reality, its not crap to make money fast, its not reality, and all in all a GREAT FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for your time and your help.
