Funimation weirdness [Fruits Basket DVDs]
I have an interesting problem with my Fruits Basket DVDs and I'm curious if anyone else has problems, too. The first DVD won't play in anything but Japanese (no subtitles, so it's a bit difficult to watch) and on all the DVDs, there is a big blue bar running across the top on the credits. On the last DVD, the bar starts popping up during the episodes. It's weird because they work perfectly on my friend's DVD player and on my computer. So I'm curious- has anyone else had strange encounters of the technical kind (with Funimation stuff)?

I don't know if it's really a technical problem, but a lot of the Funimation dbz dvds don't given an option to select Japanese (or subtitles for that matter) - you have to use the 'audio/subtitle' option on your remote control to change it from English, so if you don't have that control (or if you're watching it on a computer), you can't watch it in Japanese. I say it's not a problem because I think they wanted it that way. No other reason they'd purposely leave out a 'settings' option on the main menu when the dvd case proclaims it's English/Japanese audio.
I have also had Funi dvds screw up with the subtitles in the middle of episodes. They'd be playing in Japanese, with the subtitles working fine. Then suddenly the subtitles would be gone and the only way to get them back is to switch the audio to English, switch the subtitles to English, then switch the audio back and subtitles back (in exactly that order). I thought it was my dvd player, but I have 2 dvd players and a ps2 - same problem with all 3 players. And I only have that problem with Funi dvds.

Your problem sounds like it's your dvd player. If the error doesn't show up on the computer, or on your friend's player, it's probably something odd about the way your player is reading the dvd. I've noticed my CyberHome player works much better at decoding strange Funi dvds than my old Emerson did (which is sad, since the CyberHome was a *lot* cheaper and plays vcds as well as dvds).
