Why is it? [anime hair is ridiculous-looking]
Why is it that most hair in anime looks ridiculous? Some look cool, but most others look S-T-U-P-I-D! *cough*Yu-Gi-Oh!*cough*.

Most anime artists have a standard 'face-shape' they use for their characters. For an anime that has multiple characters of the same age and gender (take the girls from Sailormoon as an example) - the only thing that distinguishes them from one another is the hair shape and the coloring - otherwise they have the same 'face'. This leads to some highly creative hair designs. For a male example, take the pilots from Gundam Wing. Wufei has a distinctly Chinese eye shape, and Trowa has a longer face than the others - but Heero, Duo, and Quatre all have about the same face, only their hair and coloring differentiates them (and eye color - of course).
Artists have a set style. They'll vary for certain characters - Rashid from GW stands out a lot, as do the 'eyebrow' people (Treize and Dorothy) - but the average faces are all similar. They need coloring and hair shape to make each person have an individual look.
/disclaimer: there are exceptions, of course, this is only one reason for anime artists to make crazy looking hair
