argentosoma

Post by bum » Fri Apr 30, 2004 4:42 pm

im surprised to see that this anime is relatively unpopular, and seems to ahve sliped past alot of people. mabey they thought it was just anotehr mecha anime. then again, its far from just a mecha anime.

this is the blurb from the first dvd (oh and, i walked into EB, saw this, looked interesting read the blurb and bought it, wihtin about 30 seconds of knowing it existed).
takeno kaneshiro is a gifted young man and is considered by most to be someting of a genius. witha sweet, lovable grlfreind, he's got lots of dreams for the future. but thoughs dreams soon turn to nightmares when takuto is involved in a freak accident during a secret experiement. he will soon ahve things most dear to him... taken away. with takuto dead, ryu soma is born. and the only thing on his mind is revenge.
this anime is prety amazing. it has an original, the characters all feel very realistic. the animation and graphics are prety amazing. the story itself is very original, esspecialy from a phsychological eprspective, with the main character having a secret hate for funerals (milatary division) msot powerful weapon, which he has to fight alongside, while constantly wishing he could kill it. this anime is probaly the greatest series ever as far as i care (well, besides evangelion, mabey) and it simply blows me away. everything about it seems tohave bein done to eprfection, with no real flaws. the mecha combat side of things is more hardcore military that evangelion-esque wierd stuff. well, they are fighting aliens but thier is a very scientific aproach to it, which anyone that likes physics or chemistry will love and be able to realy get into. the pilots themselves are all adults and act that way, unlike other anime in which 14 year old kids have full control of the most powerful wapons known to manking and are incharage of saving the world  .

well it just kinda sux that this anime has sliped past so many people. i mean, its just something where everything is doen right, where theirs nothing that seems stupid, or tries to confuse you or anything like that. if ya like anything thats clasified as a good anime, then ya'l love this. seriosly, get it

I've seen the first 5 episodes of this. Nothing new, but the plot is watchable. Of course that Bandai trailer of Argentosoma REALLY rocks.

I didn't even know it was a mecha anime. I saw it in a store, but didn't spare it a second glance cause I thought the name sounded funny.

well, i tried looking for a meaning for it. i couldnt find anything for argento (sometimes the series is called argento-soma or argento soma, rather than argentosoma). i did however find a meaning for soma
1- The entire body of an organism, exclusive of the germ cells.

2-The body of an individual as contrasted with the mind or psyche.

Ugh. I have seen all of Argento Soma... it didn't slip by people, people slipped by it. (in my opinion of course)

The character development is ok, but then dwells on the same thing repeatedly, especially the main character and his (almost obsessive) revenge over his lost love (that he really didn't treat that great). It has episodic scenarios fighting an enemy of unknown origin. Many things are introduced, but remain shallow as time progresses. There is a major turn in the plot towards the end that throws everything, in my opinion, out the window. The story is interesting to a point, then they spend too many episodes on it without advancing it further. Although the show ended with... and ending, I felt no closure whatsoever.

There are a few things cool about it, such as the enemies certainly make things difficult for the good guys. Also some interesting politics (later on in the story there is a whole episode on a conference...I was surprised I watched it all). As bum mention the weapons, mechs, and methods have a more technical/scientific approach rather than the complete magic/oversized/overpowered weapons of some other shows.

If you want to see something stereotypical of mechs fighting an enemy but have it's own unique characteristics, and a lot of free time, you might just want to check it out.

However, I will disagree with Bum that everything has been done to 'perfection'. I think there are other options that would probably satisfy someone of my tastes better. It's been done before. Certainly not like this.... but it has.

Well, the Latin for silver is argentum...

This series sounds a lot like Saishu Heiki Kanojo (or SaiKano for short). How does it compare?
Another pointless post!

He has a sweet, lovable girlfriend who he treats badly...

Um...there's a freak accident (SaiKano - military stuff), fighting stuff...

...

Well, it's not the exact same thing, obviously. They sound like they have similar moods. For the most part, the girl in SaiKano is dying, and her boyfriend is dealing with it, which parallels what bum said about Argentosoma.

So the moods sound the same. It just popped into my head as I was reading, and for some reason it seems like it fits. Realistically, the two series will probably be wildly different, but that's what I got from that little blurb.
Another pointless post!

great).
yeah most of the characters didnt realy develope too much, besides the main chacter. but they do have a back-story and are all unique (certianly not stereotypic). then again this story is more about takuto and the alien/military conspiracy more than anything. considering the events that took place when takuto's girlfreind died, and that he prety much swore he would do anything to avenge her death (the whole reason why he joined funeral), then it does make sence for him to be obsesed with revenge.

It has episodic scenarios fighting an enemy of unknown origin
well obviosly the enemies origin is supose to be unkown until late in the series. and everything about the aliens is eventualy explained. then again, the aliens are hardly the bad guys, seeing as more often than not its funeral that makes the primary attack

also im confused about your coments on how the story doesnt advance further. sure tis not a typical place but thier is constant advancment. things are allways moving along (well, ecxept for eppisodes concentrating on strong character development rather than moving on with the story. then again, alot of anime has that).

yeah their wasnt too much of a sence of "completion" after the end, but everything did fit in. and the ending was very good (with epps 22-24 feeling more like a single movie) and felt right. and the last eppisode closed things up rather nicely , allthough a bit typical i must admit. however it still brought a few tears to my eyes. i found however, that i felt alot more closure and understanding to the series after watching the extra eppisode (epp26, "alone and by myself") which adds more of a backstory and shows you more about how the aliens are. overall, its a defenite favorite of mine, i just loved every second i spent watching it,
