Subs vs. Dubs [SPLIT]

Amen. BTW, is it considered newbish or otherwise stupid to wish that anime publishing companies in the States would churn out a greater volume of translated material, for those of us who can't speak Japanese?

Not stupid, or noobish, but unless you have a legitimate reading disorder that keeps you from following the subtitles, you might be considered a little slow. I have some friends who honestly can't watch subs - too slow, so it happens. But you don't need to know Japanese - you just have to know how to read English, and be able to read as fast as the text crosses the screen.

Besides, we're *supposed* to support the dubbers and licensers, so the more anime they get their hands on, the better. ^_^

the only shit thing about subb'd footage is if ya plan on using it for an amv, as removing subs can be a pain. well, it depends on the font size and position of the subs. (the Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien subbs from lunaranime we're nicely placed)

Personally, I prefer subs, but dubs are good for two reasons:

1) Most people really don't want to read, don't like reading, etc. So for them, they'll only watch dubbed.

2) Almost everyone starts with dubs. Dubs are the gateway to anime addiction.

True enough, but I have some old video tapes of anime that subbed, and I don't see say... madbull, or something like that being easy to get a hold of on dvd. I've heard mention of dvd's that are in the same boat, with the subs locked in.

I see learning subtitle removal to be a useful skill anyway. Say you want to use your tivo footage of some inuyasha episodes, or whatever, and start hating on that station logo that everyone watermarks tv with these days.

Or maybe some title sequence shot that perfectly fits your project, is not in the series as shown, and you can't find a clean title sequence.

but you have to also understand that not all Dubs are bad. i dont consider some dubs newbish at all. I watch subs and dubs all the time. If the dubs are good, then i dont mind watching them. However i always go back and watch them in subs as well.... you guys are way too hard on the american voice translators.....for real...

Hmm. True. I can't say that I would able to pull off a job like that.
Harder than it looks. You have to translate then you have to think up scripts that fit the mouth movements. Not an easy job. But at the same time it's their job and they have to at least do a decent job in order to get people to watch.

Then there are the voice actors.
Reasons you won't see them in any movies in theaters:
1.)Their acting is good but their looks aren't that of the "beautiful people" (I'm not saying they're ugly or anything, they just look average and given the choice between a decent anime voice actor and bradd pitt, who do you think a major director is going to choose for the lead role of his/her next box office hit?)
2.)Pretty faces but their acting sux ass
3.)Well, let's put it this way, chances are you would be a better actor (off or on screen) than them.

For the most part they aren't as professional as the people you see in theaters. If the producing companies could afford such actors I think they would hire them.
Anime would get more publicity if it had better or more well known actors. But they can't afford them because anime isn't too popular (not too many buying customers). It's just a vicious evil cycle

But anyhoo, there are some decent voice actors out there. Sometimes it also depends on the Voice Director. Some one sux in one anime then does an amazing job in another. *sigh* creating an english dubs for an anime is a terribly delicate process. So in the end watching the subs is probably better.
