How do you get yours???

Post by bazanime » Wed Dec 10, 2003 5:55 pm

Hi folks!!!

I've been watching anime for the bst part of 7 years now (only counting my adult years) and its only till about 2 years ago that it became quite easy to obtain select titles from mainstream stores in the UK.

Till recently its been a mixture of lack of interest, good distro and censors that has hindered anime in this country. It was down to fansubs and expensive imports to get our fix.

Thanks to the "POKEMON EXPLOSION", there has been a new insurgance of anime in the UK and its good to walk into a store to find some good titles.
That being said, we are still limited to old and mainstream titles with a select few new ones.

So, to get back to my original question......how do you get your anime?.....I ask this simply cos' I'm very impressed with the diverse selection of anime you guys have seen and I assume most of you arent based in japan to get access to these.

I have to say, online shopping has been invaluable and.....um...coughcough[there was something in his throat]coughcough

phew!!

I borrow mine from friends. If I like a series, then I try to collect it (thus far my collection is very limited).

Oh, and one girl randomly gave me three DVDs she didn't want yesterday--the first discs of Love Hina, Black Heaven and Pilot Candidate. I've seen Love Hina but not the other two, and LH isn't my favorite series or anything... but how can you pass up free? :D

Just in case anyone's tempted, the site rules disallow linking to downloadable anime episodes.

I tend to trial series either by borrowing from friends or seeing them at my anime society, and buy those that I enjoy.

amazon.com

They list 3 prices:
Retail
Their price (usually about 10% to 20% less)
and sponsored stores prices (which can be up to 80% less!)

For example, a friend of mine was surfing amazon and he found the whole 8 dvd set (American NOT Japanese, official, not bootlegged) for under $40. (Retail is around $180).

sponsored stores pay amazon for exposure, and do business by selling high quantities at low prices (much like a clothing store outlet does).

I have yet to find better, unless your looking for bootlegged anime, then you can get better prices that way, but be cautioned, I spent $100 once on Inuyasha bootlegs and got burned bad (bad quality). I'm not doing that ever again.

I go into a store/convention, randomly point at things and go "OMG I want it" then buy. (Not even joking, I made one vendor at a con this summer laugh at me)

Cons, primarily because I live in the wastelands of semi-rural southern Canada that have little hope of providing me with an adequate source of Anime anywhere within 20 miles

Most of my DVDs I get from Madman (Bebop movie and Vandread have been exceptions).
For anime merchandse I go to Tamarket, even though I go past Shin Tokyo nearly every second day (I choose not to shop there out of dissupport (no that looks right) for their business). And of course there's always conventions, I can't wait to see what those US dealer rooms are like.
As for other anime. I get most of it from my anime club, various suppliers, and LAN parties.
