What's the difference between an OVA, DVD, and a fansub. I know what a fansub and dvd is, but I don't know what an OVA is.

OVA's are seperate movies or miniseries based on the anime.

Typically OVA's come first and try to go along the lines of the story to either give it a begining to an end.
Alot of the time the animation is a little better (higher budget).

OVA is an Original Video Animation (or OAV--original animated video). It's a professionally done animation based off a series, but not necessarily part of the series. It's also usually not as long, and is sometimes done by a different company. Love Hina Again, for example, is an OAV for Love Hina.

A lot of the time they are also used as test runs for the anime to see if it would get good ratings, and if it does they turn it into a 25 or26 ep tv series......usually.

Ex. tenchi muyo!(OVA)= Tenchi Universe(tv)

The reverse is also true. For example Fushigi Yuugi had I believe two OVAs which talked about events after the 52 episode series. Also, OVAs sometimes tell the story of the same anime only with a different plot (or in the so-called alternate universe :P ). One example is Magic Knights Rayearth. The OVA version of it is called Rayearth, and it dealt with the same characters only with a completely different situation (and the animation was SOOOOO X-like without the decapitation of bodies :P ).

or you can get something like FLCL, which is more or less a 3 hour movie divided into six half hour segments. FLCL had no series before it, and problaby won't have one after it, all it had as a precursor was the manga, which i really wan't to get my hands on.

One of the most notable after end OVA being Samurai X- Reflections, which actually takes place at the very end of Kenshin ( or so i'm told)
I made the mistake of watching it before i found out that it was the end of the kenshin tv series, talk about spoilers XD , I've only seen to the end of the Shisshio Story arc.

jim ... that sucks ... look at it this way ... at least it wasn't like what had happened to me.

When i had jsut started watching anime, i was downloading it on kazaa, and it was FLCL, i thought it looked cool becasue i saw a few MSI AMV's. So i decided to ge the series ... well ep 4 downloaded before the others ... so i watched it. I was still used to american cartoons and thought it would explain it's self and a bit of what had happened before ... yea right ... if you saw flcl then you;d know ep 4 was the most fucked up ep in the whole OVA ... and that was my ice breaker for anime ... nice eh?
