Unknown anime?

Post by Arigatomina » Wed Sep 17, 2003 5:40 am

Anyone fallen in love with an anime that no one seems to know about? Care to advertise it and spread the word?

I have a horrid friend who happens to be loaded, and she brings home the strangest anime when she comes back from Japan. I've sat through titles I'd never heard of, many of which I didn't care for. But there were a few that caught my eye. I know some are out here now, including Haunted Junction, Gokudo, and Magic Users Club. I can't remember the names of most of the odd anime she showed me, but Prince of Tennis is the one that I kept on my books for eventual purchase.

It's a cute anime, not at all what I was expecting from a show that features athletic matches (she also had Princess Nine, but I didn't care for that). The characters have depth, there's comedy, drama, and even a psycho or two (almost creepy how realistic some of the twisted characters are - not like the fantasy anime types). The actual tennis matches aren't at all boring, and the animation is just lovely. Of course, being a favorite of mine, it has bishonen galore, but even the main girl is cute and more endearing than annoying (a nice break there). I think the only complaint I have about the anime is that I haven't seen the entire series (it's a long one).

Anyway, if you have a favorite anime that doesn't seem to be known of here, go ahead and advertise a bit.

Ooh, an oppurtunity for Narutaru/Shadow Star pimpage on a plate 8)

The fansubs of this... unusual... series are up to episode 10 at the time of typing, and it's already headlining my 'buy it if and when it is ever licensed' list. Darkly atmospheric and excellently plotted, with characters that got me hooked quickly. Superficially, Shiina is the typical outgoing and lod young heroine, who finds herself with a cute, mute little alien sidekick named Hoshimaru. But as others of Hoshimaru's bizarre 'species' (none of whom bear much resemblance to the others) appear, it soon transpires that not all of those linked with these 'Dragonets' are entirely benign. Episodes 8, 9 and 10 are heart-wrenchingly depressing.

The original art style of Mohiro Kitoh is largely preserved, as is his labyrinthine plot. Noticeably, the feeling of many different factions, each mysterious and with an objective that you can never quite pin down is carried over well. Good voice direction adds a lot of depth to some characters.

Ultimately, I find it to be a marked success, and hope that subsequent episodes don't disappoint. Although the cute-style intro and formulaic first episodes appear to be heading the series in a decidedly unoriginal direction, it is soon all cleared up and the series develops into its own style in time to preserve interest.

the only thing that comes to mind is POPOTAN and any of the newest anime that's based off a hentai - maintaining a level of ecchiness but not quite risque enough to be hentai. POPOTAN doesn't have enough to be hentai but too much for mainstream, so it's one of those unusual series that may never get picked up.

Character designs are by the same person who did SOULTAKER and NURSE WITCH KOMUGI CHAN.

The story so far is bizzare and interesting with it's sci-fi twist of travelling thought time and space. While throwing in a bath scene every episode. Mai is my favorite.

Another that's rather interesting is Triangle Heart OVA 2 - story about sibling body guards trying to protect their childhood friend. Kind of like NOIR but with real depth, and yes also based off a hentai game only it has none.

Hmm....well a couple that I have in my collection would be:

Jewel Bem Hunter Lime (Very funny lil OVA)
Sakura Diaries (It's a weird sort of romance comedy)
Saiyuki (It's newish, but no one really seems to talk about it that much)
Maze Mega Burst Space (Rather uh..."interesting" I have the ova and the first episode of the series, (the ep came as an extra on the dvd.) it's different to say the least lol. )

It seems as though I've posted this somewhere before..hmmm.....

I'll second the vote for Black Jack - very interesting/oddly dark anime. And I think Saiyuki will rise in popularity once more of the series comes out here, but it's still a great 'lesser-known' anime. ^_^
