Banner ads

Post by BishounenStalker » Sat Aug 16, 2003 8:24 pm

Just wondering what everyone deems "worthy" and "unworthy" in a banner ad entry. I tend to vote the funny ones, or ones featuring underused characters I like.

All these lame little phrases like "let your dreams run free" really annoy me. If they're going to make an "inspirational" banner, at least try to come up with something witty, or that at least sounds profound ("Don't await inspiration. Become it" is a good example).

Another thing that helps is proofreading. I know it sounds kind of nitpicky, but banners are like a billboard for the site. The last thing we want is to advertise to the Net that we can edit video but can't spell to save our lives. Sure, most graphics editors don't have a spellcheck, but that's what we have eyes and a brain for.

So what kind of stuff do you like to see in banners, and what are your banner ad pet peeves if you have any?

When I rate the banners, i dont even hardly look at them. It has to catch my eye. That's the point of a banner, to catch your eye. If I have to strain for a second to read crappy text, its a definate no vote. I rarely, rarely ever vote yes. It has to 1. Catch my eye and 2. Be clever or cool.

I instantly vote no on a banner that:

Has anything misspelled.
Has a character stretched out to the wrong aspect ratio.
Is pixellated or blurry.
Hurts my eyes with a color scheme I find ugly or clashing.
Has text that I find annoying or stupid, but that's a matter of personal taste.
~90% of all animated banners. If it's going to move, it better be *extremely* funny or cool.

Stuff I like:

Pleasant, eye pleasing colors.
Cute or beautiful characters that I like, whether or not they are familiar to me.

That's about it for me, just remember that everyone's personal tastes are different, and there's no way to be certain you'll please everyone.

My banner pet peeves include the really obnoxious and cliche ones. For example, ones that exploit a commonly used theme or *UH OH NO NO* imply an endorsement from a character (YOU KNOW WHICH ONE) is Not Good.

P.S.

Could I have your opinion about a really serious objective-subjective factual banner. For example:

(number) videos and counting
from over (number) members
who have made (number) journal entries
(number) forum posts and (number)guides.
AnimeMusicVideos.org, it's the autoritative resource on anime music videos

I can't stand seeing those banners with spelling mistakes!!

If the banner is funny or well done (ie decent graphic and text) and I like it then I vote it in. My own banners tend to revolve around some sort of concept but I haven't done any comedy ones yet (except prehaps my azumanga diaoh one).

Another pet hate, people who re-enter a very similar banner to their last with only minor changes. If people didn't like it once do you really think they like it this time.

And danielwang... that banner your thinking of wouldn't it only be accurate for a limited time... and how are you going to fit all that on a 468x60 banner? Still enter it if you want and let the public decide.

what should not be done:
- is Copiing someone else's Banner ( like mine! )
- using fault Grammer ( like mine! )
- making a statement directed at just one problem ( like mine! )

yup - see mine; that is what it should not look like 8)

I vote Unworthy on 95% of banners. In addition to the issues already mentioned, I generally vote 'Worthy' if a banner is genuinely inspiring and excellent. 'Good enough' is not, in my opinion, good enough.
