DAMN ANIME ART IS HARD...

Post by OmniStrata » Fri Aug 01, 2003 1:28 am

Those of you who draw...
[as in not fan art, original art...]

Who here draws anime style? I've run into this REALLY weird predicament. I remember my older sketches about 2 years ago. [they r0rx0red]. But for some reason, I haven't been drawing in a while and now when I WANT to draw something good, it turns up like schlop... [krap, excrement, the bad stuff]

So, for me, drawing isn't like biking. Normally, you can hop back onto a bike but for art, I USED to draw pretty damn good but now, it's like ???

Did any of you run into this? Pencil artists who can't seem to draw when they want to but draw fantastic when they "don't"?

[my best artwork seems to come when I'm so bored in college class that the only way for me to stay "awake" was to sketch. I managed to SELL some of my sketches... they were original ideas for a female summer swimwear set but still... DAMN IT WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME?!]

I know its cliche, but its so true...PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. And yes, for a long time, your talent wont be consistant, I still go through that shit where one day ill be busting out great shit left and right, and then the next, I cant seem to get a basic standing pose to look right. Thats just how it is, but the more you practice, the better you get it. If you got a pencil in your hand, and youre drawing, youre getting better, its that simple.

you do Cell Animation ? . sketchers-block ^^ . . if it would help any, there is a few people still developing Mega-Tokyo . . idea's for drawing sometimes come from seeing how others are doing it!
. yeah~ . . I haven't done Cell animation for at least 3 years now; when you said this, I started drawing free-hand and T_T - I know what you mean ~_~

. just practice drawing things that you haven't drawn before and it will come back to you ^_^

I learned something useful in drawing yesterday.

Try drawing the original sketch with a dull No. 2 pencil so it's easy to erase, and then when you think you have the correct frame down, trace over that with a thicker type of lead/ink. Then if you want it to look professional in a sense, try to smooth out rough edges if you used ink, make the outline thicker. That's a good way to get back on your feet again until you regain your style.

So far lately I've been kicking my old pictures asses with that method, so I think I'll stick with it.

And remember, a truely good drawing (Unlike my old shit that took at most half an hour) can take even hours to make.

I feel your pain, Omni. After finishing up the drawing classes for my major with an ArtNazi, it put me off of drawing for a while. Then when I finally got the inspiration to pick up my damn pencil again, I felt like I couldn't draw an eye if my life depended on it. RealNeoHentaiMaster's right. It's not like hopping back on a bike. You lose practice, you get rusty :(

Thankfully I've recaptured my anime style again. The only thing I want now is for my computer tablet to behave itself so I can color some of the stuff I've done.

I had to switch my major from Animation to Digital Media because UCF dumped it's 2-D Animation program and I had to jump ship. But when I took Intro to Cel Animation, I'd have to say I learned something VERY useful: carry a small palm-sketchbook (about the size of an address book) with you at all times. Whenever you're bored at bus stops, in restaurants, on the Monorail, the subway, etc., pull it out and just start sketching poses of the people around you. Not finished pictures, just a little gesture sketch to quickly capture the way they're standing or sitting or whatever. It'll keep you from getting rusty, AND it'll give you references for when you work on bigger projects.

Omni, I also feel your pain. I lost my drawing touch for about 4 months but it'll come back. Just don't go crazy like I did. I broke quite a few pencils.

Actually, I'm the total opposite. I need to want to draw (which isn't very often.... -_-() ) to draw well, and if i don't want to draw, my stuff looks like total crap.

I take art classes in school and one day, i just didn't want to draw and my watercolor painting looked like a three year old did it. All splatters and not very neat. (I ended up doing another one cuz i couldn't live with the first one.)

As for original anime art...

I drew some stuff for my friend for her story that was original. As long as i have pretty good descriptions and a good pencil, I can do something. However, i never finished this one pic because i wan't in the mood to draw.

When i don't have to draw (like for my art class or anything) and i don't feel like drawing, my art turns out horrible. When i feel like drawing, i coukd go one for hours and not stop.

most of my (good) stuff is fan art, unless you count the art portfiolio i'm planning on submitting for college. (it's really heavy..... )

well, good luck with your art. I think you just need a little more motivation to draw and som pratice and you'll do fine.

That's just me then I guess...

The more bored I am in a situation, the more fantastic I tend to draw. One of my friends who r0x0rs in his art told me, when you're bored, caring about how "perfect" a picture is goes down in level... [you don't care all that much when bored] but then when you start to "analyze" what's with your pic, THAT'S when the trouble hits you...

He's like me sometimes. Only his artwork is consistent... XD

Clothing is a trick for me so I have a tendency to draw lots of naked people before I actually get the scene finished. [my cousins think it's hilarious like I'm drawing hentai or something :) ]
