DBZ...just kidding. I'm looking for good Anime!

Post by SirValiant » Tue Jul 08, 2003 7:28 pm

Hey everyone,

I wanna find another really good Anime to get into. I'm a huge fan of Dragonball Z and Berserk, and I really like Gundam Wing. I'm really into the whole theme of virtue in these anime and what is especially important is my interest in the knightly aspects in these anime. This is clearly evident in Berserk, and somewhat evident in Gundam Wing with the Gundams, and while Goku isn't a knight, he sure acts in that manner of chivalry and stuff. I really like the intricacies of Berserk and Gundam Wing in their elaborate plot and I like the feudal aspects as well. And it almost seems like I lean toward apocalyptic stories. I also really like Akira, and a sort kinda liked Metropolis and Princess Mononoke.
I didn't like Ghost in the Shell. I saw a trailer for Earthian, if anyone can tell me if they know if thats any good. Anyways, can you guys recommend anything else?

My friend was telling me something about Samurai X or something. Anyone know anything about that also?

Samurai X is the precursor for Rouroni Kenshin. It's back when Kenshin was violent and a killer/etc. Check it out before watching the series just called "Rouroni Kenshin". Check out "Hellsing" if you want knights/etc. S'bout a group (Called hellsing) that is there to destroy the undead. They treat it like modern day knights (atleast the leader) and are loyal to the queen of england. Their secret weapon is a vampire of great power. He loves getting skewered. They also fight with the Vatican's (that's Catholic Pope peoples) anti-undead units because of religion/beliefs.

Lessee..virtue...I guess i shouldn't recoommend La Blue Girl then...

Inu-yasha deals with Fuedal Japan and has to do with virtue/true love/some other good stuff.

For no particular reason i'm gonna say "Noir" just because it's secret spy badass stuff.

Rurouni Kenshin is good (don't care much for the actual samurai x ovas - that's just me) if you like honor codes and history in your anime - Meiji era japan, and it's not as depressing as Samurai X. And Earthian is an alright anime - rather depressing a lot of the time, and not very action packed if you aren't into romance/dramas. If you're not familiar with it, you might consider Yu Yu Hakusho - I find that it has similar traits to dbz (on the good side), but a tighter story line since it has a lot less episodes - and the fighting is cleaner, plenty of character interaction and tournaments.

Your tastes sound very similar to mine, so try anything on my top 10 that you haven't already seen:

1. Berserk
2. X/1999
3. Rurouni Kenshin (OVA)
4. Outlaw Star
5. Trigun
6. Record of Lodoss War
7. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
8. Princess Mononoke
9. Cowboy Bebop
10. Hellsing

BTW, the Kenshin OAV's are Samurai X.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

Wow. Thanks everyone. I also meant to ask about Ninja Scroll and Evangelion. I heard those were really good. I thought that La Blue Girl comment was pretty funny :D I'm still open for any more recommendations. Anyone know where I can find out more about X/1999's or Record of Lodoss War's storyline?
