Gimme that Old Time Religion

Post by Lady Maetel of La Metalle » Wed Apr 23, 2003 11:37 am

Any other people out there remember Old Tyme Japanimation  ---Matsumoto's wonderful stuff, plus the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Space Runaway Ideon, God-Mars, Lupin III, Heavy Metal L'Gaim (and that music by MIO), Area 88, Aura Battler Dunbine, Armoured Trooper Votoms, Space Adventure Cobra, Agent J9, Cyborg 007, &c., &c., ad infinitum?
----Cats should never be allowed to drink martini's.
----Power corrupts. Absolute power is kind of neat.

But of course. I'm one of the (seemingly) few old-timers who enjoy old-school stuff like that.

I've got a particular like for the Yamato films and shows...I oughta go back and watch the Black Tiger attack on the Dark Nebula fleet in Be Forever, Yamato. Wish I could find the music for that bit!

If you dig Captain Harlock, you might like this.

Yay! Yamato! I grew up on it as a wee lad. I've been watching them in Japanese recently, and while I always prefer to watch movies and shows in their original language, there's just something better about Deslock sounding like an aging queen.

And you had to love the tribute on the last volume of Excel Saga. My wife, who's never seen the Yamato or Harlock shows, thought I was nuts for laughing so hard.

Hey...

I'm an old timer too!

Yamato (Star Blazers as I saw it) was why I'm an anime fan to begin with.
Ranma and the Dirty Pair TV Series and Macross and the Gundam OAVs are still titles I watch and enjoy.

I certainly like a lot of the new titles, but I'll never turn my back on the old stuff just because it's not as "hip"

I've heard about that... I just picked up volume 4 today, so I know I've got another two to go. I was more interested in the sentai parody at first, but Yamato-style Puchuus whet my appetite too.

That episode had me weeping with laughter as well.

None of my friends knew what was so funny.

I never got into Tekkaman...I gave more attention to Tekkaman Blade, which I've just remembered had one pretty good OP.

I'm more of a Matsumoto/Nagai giant robot/old-school Gundam guy.

Few things'd be better than having a Mazinger Z DVD box set fall into my lap

*old-timer in training*
Seen some, want to see more...so far seen the original Mobile Suit Gundam...that's about it, been trying to track down Dunbine, L-Gaim, Ideon and the original Getter Robo *silently thankful Dunbine's finally been licensed for US release...even if the infamous Carl Macek is attached...with any luck the death threats from the Macross community were enough to keep him from trying a stunt like that again*

I would -love- to track down some of the older anime that I grew up with. While the recent releases of Robotech and Macross are neat, I really want some of the more obscure stuff I used to watch- the shows that were dubbed/rewritten to form the Force Five shows, the rest of Danguard Ace (the only tape of it I ever saw/found couldn't have been all of that show...), and Go Lion. I'd love to see what those shows were like with their original voices and plots...
