In the context of the anime,
Magic Knight Rayearth's comedy was very strong at the beginning of Season 1, but by the time you get into watching Season 2, there will be very little (due to a more mature undertone to the season).
(As a side-note, this happens a lot to CLAMP's stories. The first part has a lot of romantic comedy and fun stuff, but the second part suddenly tends to turn very serious. For example,
CardCaptor Sakura changes from the comedy in the original run to a serious theme in the
Master of the Clow phase.)
