I agree for the most part other than her. I do agree that Kaoru DOES whine near the beginning of the Kyoto arc, but as it develops she starts to believe in him (big thing for me...faith/trust well in couple relationships and not only girl->guy, but vice versa) and also can fight (strength of character) to help his cause. By the end, I actually liked Kaoru quite a bit and am one of the few people that like her more than Tomoe (which I never understood why people liked her so much based on the OVAs alone. She isn't at all developed like she is in the manga...although I still didn't like her that much).BishounenStalker wrote: Kaoru (Kenshin)

I really liked Kaoru when I first watched RK, but she's fallen a bit since then (rewatching, judging, comparing, etc). It doesn't help that I have't (won't) see the Christian saga, so any growth she makes as a character there I'll miss out on. But while she's very dedicated and loyal, she's on the border for me. She *does* whine, and yet she also shoulders the burden of feeding and housing her guests. She *is* abusive, and yet she's sweet natured when it comes to other people's problems. She *is* bossy, and yet she knows when to stay back and not get in the way (excpet the episode on the ship, but that was coincidence that she was even there). She's immature, and yet she has an understanding beyond her age when she talks to Kamatari (sp). I think she has all the flaws mentioned, but she also has enough pluses in her favor to even things out. As a character, I think she's well-rounded, and I rather like her despite her drawbacks (I'll still complain about those, though, doesn't mean I don't like her as a whole).

I think one thing a lot of people are missing is that Kaoru is 17 years old. I don't think many of us were that mature at 17 and she takes care of herself (lives by herself), her guests, her home and teachs. I take this into account when judging her (highly).Arigatomyna wrote:I really liked Kaoru when I first watched RK, but she's fallen a bit since then (rewatching, judging, comparing, etc). As for the Christian Arc....stay away from it. It's not part of the "real" show...nothing past 62 (Kyoto) is from the manga. Only the OVA BREIFLY touches a few volumes of the Revenge Arc. And no...she doesn't develop futher...you'll notice all the episodes that were filler and not part of the manga have no devleopment in the story or characters since...it's not written by the author who created them

Some good:
Urd (Oh My Goddess!) - She's not all saccharine like Belldandy, and not spoiled acting like Skuld. She's got an independent personality, which is good.
Mutsumi (Love Hina) - She's friendly, but not to a submissive point. She's also far more relaxed than most female anime characters, and is funny to boot.
Rally Vincent (Gunsmith Cats) - Sassy, can use a gun, and also very independent.
Yuriko Star (Irresponsible Captain Tylor) - Sure, she seems bitchy, but she is willing to put principle over her own personal dislike. She could also change, however, and see Tylor in a better light.
All of the main female characters in Azumanga Daioh.
Bad:
All lolicon.
Bitchy girls. Bitchy does not equal strong personality.
Total airheads. I'd exclude Milly from Trigun, though. And Osaka
Angsty types, men and women. Shoujo is rife with these types.

I refused to watch the arc when I first read up on it, so no worries there. I only sat through a few scenes my friend forced me to watch (just enough to see Sano sing, and them strip poor little Kenshin after he loses the money - wouldn't watch any more than that). But Kaoru is 17?! I have never heard that before - the sites I've seen all say she's the same age as Sano - 19. Or is he younger? I heard he was 10 (or 9) in the war, Kenshin's 9 yrs older at 28, and Kaoru's the same age as Sano at the beginning of the series. So...where am I off at? And is it the manga?dwchang wrote:I think one thing a lot of people are missing is that Kaoru is 17 years old. -To make this fit the thread, I think age would make a difference on my opinion of Kaoru, since I judged her according the the premesis that she was 19 - clearly an adult in that time period.

Yeah avoid it...read the manga and the revenge arc which takes place RIGHT after Episode 62 (in fact if you know the manga, you know a few things in 62 that were getting set up).Arigatomyna wrote: I refused to watch the arc when I first read up on it, so no worries there. I am 100% sure she is 17 y/o. Misato is 16 and she is 17. That's a reason I don't forgive Misato as much since she is a year younger and a lot less mature.Arigatomyna wrote:But Kaoru is 17?! Then again, I guess I shouldn't be too harsh since she acts like a typical 16 y/o and it's really just that Kaoru is more mature for her age. Misato lives with Okina, has a family and so on and thus can be more immature and irresponsible (although not for her age). Kaoru had to grow up faster.
